| Quote ="Catalancs"I think those figures a very optimistic. In a town the size of Wigan I can't see us getting an average of 20,000 throught the gates. One thing I thin k we should eb looking at is welcoming anyone who shows an interest and encouraging any disgruntled Latics 'fans'. The attitude of many Latics 'fans' turned many Wiganers off the football and, it could be argued, has played a part in their troubles.'"
We're just short of 16k average for this year, we were at 16k for the 2007 season when we were a poor / average team. Surely we should be able to attract a few thousand on top of what we have now if we start winning pots!
We currently have better averages now than our best average when we were world beaters, surely that counts for something??!! =#800000(14,680 in 1993-94)
We should attract 18k by right, just by being successful...the rest is up to IL & Co attracting folk in from the Manchester Area's he was talking about last year.

| Quote ="Dougy"We rely on away fans to crack the 20k barrier. If every home seat was sold i think that would come to 19,500. Less than 500 away fans means we wouldn'tt 20k even if we sold every home seat!
Crusaders, Quins, Hudds out. Widnes, Halifax, Barrow, Leigh in.
That would increase our average significently.'"
I agree.
Home support has never been the problem for us. Its the lack of away fans thats the real issue in hitting 20K+.
Wire. Leeds. Saints & HKR seem to be the only ones that regularly bring over a decent crowd. Hull FC - Now and again.
The Bulls and Cas used to, so its to be hoped they can both reclaim their 'lost' supporters over the next couple of years.
If we had anything like Prem football away support, i think we'd be over 20K every single home game!
Oh, and New Central Park?
Been calling it that since we left Central Park (RIP).

| Although we may not like it, it's vital that we have a strong Stains & Wire team to bring good support. The Bulls have faded, Leeds in average, the Hulls teams are okay, the rest.....well......

Hull KR brought a smaller(for them) following than usual thsi year but the game was on TV so to be expected. I've always though Leeds away crowds have been disappointing given the size of the city.
Saints - 5,000
Wire - 5,000
Hull/Hull KR - 3,000
Leeds - 2,000

In Wigan in the 40s/50s/60s, there was only two places for young couples to go to on dates:
Wigan Rugby
The Cinema
How many people on here have parents who went to watch Wigan RL when they were 'courting'? I know I'm one!

Thought Manly was bad with 37k on. Cannot imagine how the hell they squeezed another 10k on that day!!!
I bet Brian was crushed to buggery.

| England v Fiji in the World Cup. Pretty sure the crowd was given at 28,000 but there were plenty more on that night. Someone from the offices told my dad a few days later that it was going towards upper 30k's.
The Kop moving as one, the Fijian war dance and the Fijian bloke in the grass skirt halfway up a floodlight playing one of thise small Polynesian guitars are some of the great memories of that night.

Went to that game. Nowhere near as many as there was against Manly (36.5k).
Was that the game where we scored a couple with kicks to the corner (quite unusual in those days)

| Announcer said it was 26,000 but perhaps it was a mistake, should have said 36,000.
All papers printed 26,000 and the rest is history.
Personally i'd say 26,000 was pretty accurate.

| Anyhow, given Whelan's comments this week, you can see he's getting fed up with it all. He's thrown millions upon millions at the club and then no-one turns up and those that do blame it on Whelan!

| The novelty of Latics has worn off and that is why crowds are slipping. They havent been a league club for that long really compared to most teams at the top level and they havent built up foundations and history like most clubs have. They shot up the leagues so quickly and most of their fans are bandwaggon jumpers but now they are all jumping back off.
If they do move out of the stadium and sell it im sure we could get it for a decent price as we would have DW over a barrell. Maybe we could buy it cheap and then have Tics as lodgers and fook them around

| Whelan would sell it too, he'll do owt to make some money. I think the council own half the ground(well they paid for half) so you could technically argue we own half already.

I think it's more of the all powerful Premier League placing the gun in Latics hand. The stadium is going to be the home of the football club for a good long time to come, despite the ramblings of a few Latics followers.

| If rumours are true, and Latics do move out, it will only be good for RL.
RL's biggest club shouldn't have to share with a tin pot football club.
