Based on Wigan reserve games and his televised Hull KR appearances and comments, I think Charnley is a better centre than both.

IMO Goulding and Pryce are better as wingers regardless of what position they have started their Wigan careers within the reserves.

It should all boil down to who has earned their spot at centre through impressive performances, a commendable attitude and who has worked the hardest in training at this current time. Not who is the more natural fit - at the start of the year Goulding would have been a centre and Charnley on the wing - not who has had more experience, not who will be here for the future etc. The ethos of this club and the success we have achieved this season has come down to picking players every week who have earned their place in the team. Reputation has meant nothing.

So with the above in mind, I would say Josh Charnley evidently deserves the centre spot next week. He's been in excellent form at Hull KR and has been praised to high heaven from Justin Morgan & the Hull KR fans. He deserves his spot above Karl Pryce or Stefan Marsh IMO.

What about Phelps for a one off game there?

Karl Pryce hasn't played in two weeks and Darrell Goulding has being doing a reputable job on the wing. Keep the in-form Goulding on the wing and bring the in-form Josh Charnley back from Hull KR to play at centre.

i cannot see thornley getting a game - cant imagine he is flavour of the week at the minute.

The only reason Pryce didn't play is that he was 18th man in the last two games. He couldn't play in the Leeds U20 game as it was on the same night as the 1st team game, and he didn't play against Bradford on Saturday because the coaching team wanted Roberts, Mossop and Feka to get some game time.

Not worth bringing Charnley back for me, let him stay with Hull KR for the rest of the year.

No we wouldn't. He's our player first and foremost. Not to mention the loan deal is only on a week to week basis and we can have him back whenever we please. The only stipulation is that we give them 24 hours notice. If it benefits Wigan bring the lad back. We've done the same with Liam Farrell, Ben Davies and Shaun Ainscough.

I wonder if it is more like Joel will move to centre -this has been tried already and we do have plenty of cover in the 2nd row.

Joel Tomkins should take the centre spot. Charnley is settled at Hull KR playing good rugby for now.

Josh Charnley is settled at Hull KR, so we should move Joel Tomkins out of the position he's played all year in to centre and shuffle our back row a bit?

He has already played there this season and already plays in the first team. This would allow the likes of Farrell and Tuson to be our main go forward behind Hansen in the backrow, they will get more game time.

Surely you can see the difference between moving Joel to centre and moving Charnley from Hull KR.

But Goulding and Pryce have far more experience at centre than either Joel Tomkins or Charnley.

Joel Tomkins is a much better player though.

Charnley for me, we can then loan Marsh to Hull KR.

It's hard work keeping superleague clubs going with our players.

There is no way I would play Thornley, if he had a stormer we would have another Ashton on our hands with the fans and press kicking up a stink

What better opportunity will Charnley get to play in the first team? He has been in excellent form in the right centre spot. What more does he need to do. Also if Gleeson doesn't recover well enough then he might find himself playing in a grand final soon!

Having said that I think the Wigan coaching staff need to decide what is best for Josh and if it would be better not to unsettle him just now while he is playing well (if playing for your hometown club on the day they could clinch their first trophy in eight years could be classed as unsettling!). On balance I would say give him his chance as he deserves it.

We'll have to agree to disagree then. I think playing Joel out of position is both unnecessary when you have a player in the form like Josh Charnley, and more 'disruptive' when on balance you put more pressure on the likes of Liam Farrell and Chris Tuson. It would be a very Noble-esquire move. Not something I would associate with this management team.



Yes I can see the difference. One's perfectly logical and the other is plain stupidity.

Tha'ts why I think it is far more logical to play either Pryce or Goulding at centre. They have been training as part of the first team squad all year, whereas Charnley hasn't.

I'm not having a go at Charnley btw, my thoughts on him have been posted many times on here.
