| If Smith was available for an absolute pittance as back up for the rest of the squad i'd still probably not bother!
He's a skillfull player with ball in hand but unfortunatly 50% of the time you don't have the ball and when it comes down to defending he's possibly the worst player i've seen in a Wigan kit.
I'd rather have Phelps, Lockers, Gleeson and Flanagan as back up for the halfbacks.

| Quote ="Legend That Sorts It"exactly, smith is what we need, im sorry but to all these people who say he cant defend have a look at any good 6 or 7 thats ever played rugby league, there not good defenders, smith is the kind of player that gets to training and just want a ball in hs hand, not defend a tackle bag or players'"
How does that relate to Trent Barrett then, for just one example .
I,m not bagging what Tim Smith is capable of but such a general sweeping statement about the defense does not stand up , Sam Tomkins is a much better defender than Tim Smith and so is Rob Burrows no excuses needed.

excuses about what, whats the borrower got to do with anything, theres many scrum halfs who cant defend, and im not comparing him to barrett, how can you compare to a standard that high, smith is a great player and people dont want to admit that we will miss him, funny how before smith got injured and our pack started performin, no one questioned his defence

| The problem is people are so wrapped up in thinking Sam Tomkins is the next Shaun Edwards that they are too pig ignorent to see other talent... Simple as that.

| Seriously people just watch the games. Smith, had a lot of potential after a good season in the NRL, ignore that and and watch how poor he was for Wigan.
Look at how much better we play when he's not in the team.
Look at the results since he's left.

| that's because we don't have anybody who can run a decent line...
Come on, how long as it since you sat back and thought 'yeah that was a really decent play we just did??' - The last time I did that was when we beat Saints, and who was our 6 for that game? Smith.

You are welcome, and it was far more of a contribution than Smith gave in his time at Wigan.

| If his head was with it and he was used as a 7 then probably worth a punt, sadly i do not think his really bought into coming to Wigan and it showed in his performances.
Despite the odd glimpse of quality he turned out to be a risk that did not pay off.
I have no doubt he will return to Australia and have a good career, but it seemed to me he was never really committed to a career in SL.

I can't even see him having a great NRL career, when the pressure was on and the going got tough he couldn't handle it. SL was a way to play RL at a top level without all the other pressures which NRL present, and he still managed to fu&k that up.

| For his few moments and his undoubted ability to pass a ball, I cant seriously believe people would have him back. We are well shut of him.

agreed. what woundme up the most was that he liked to 'talk a good game' on the field, but had an inability to do himself what he expected eveybody else to do for him.
he also had a touch too much show pony about him for me. he also flapped when under pressure.
overall - behind a good pack, hes fine. but then again, behind a good pack, MOST halves look good !

If he was willing to defend he would fit in perfectly with Sam at 6 and Tommy/Riddell at 9.
It would be a gamble to take him on for another season but I would rather see us do this than go with Tommy again in the halves next year. I think Tommy is brilliant and I hope he finishes his career at Wigan but not as a half back as it is holding us back by Noble persisting with his limited game in the halves which I think in the long run is going to do no favours to Sam Tomkins.

| Doesnt matter, Smith doesnt want to go back to Superleague, its well known that his agent is trying to get him a contract in the NRL.
