He was a fall back signing due to his off field issues which are not hes fault.
But IMO Smith is far and away a better scrum half than Dobson.and without his issues i would have picked him every time over Dobson and many others in SL

Bottom line is, I'm looking at your league table and im thinking 4 points or 2 points? Those extra two points put us above warrington.
but still, best of luck Timmy

if you put smith into a strong team with a good defence, alongside a big running 6 he would look world class every day of the week.
If he lined up instead of sean long in saints team he'd look a world beater, but he's just not a very good fit for our team.
I would go as far as calling him a "luxury" scrum half, if the rest of your team is solid and working well, he can give you the extra quality pass every day of the week.

| Overall, not that impressive. Outshined week on week by a young kid in his debut season with bags of enthusiasm and pride playing for his hometown team. Wont be missed.

| hard to say really, he wasn't here long enough to really evaluate. But he didn't have the best of starts, blew hot and col.
but thanks for the effort and good luck in the future.
Surely he'll stay long enough, so see if we get to wembley?

| He was crap.
He played like a pansy, and tackled like a 3 year old girl.
Good riddance.

| Quote ="wiganermike"As far as recruitment policy goes I think we will have seen the last of the short term stop gap signings. At the time when we signed the likes of Smith on short deals we had little room under the cap due to expensive signings from the old regime. We had to pick up cheap players to use what money we had to fill out the squad until these big contracts were up and we had more freedom.'"
With Barratt's, Higham and Calders wages free for 2009 I don't see why we needed a cheap player at all.
Rather IMO he was available and the club took a risk. Recruiting a player for a season and a bit which is all this ever was never struck me as a bright idea especially in the half backs whatever the reason.
Quote Some have gone already and more will go this year and next so we can get the players we want and need rather than stop gap signings. Signing up of key players on long term deals has started under IL and this shows his intentions.'"
Not many (thought to be on high-wages) players leaving again this season though Hock's demise will free up more money than was previously available but that is hardly a good thing given he was our best player.
Recruitment needs to address the needs of the team which IMO it has not recently. We have brought in outside backs when a prop and a true replacement half back was needed.

IMO it was his lack of pace that made him easily exposed defensively.

Agreed.
There was a genuine fear for tackling from Smith showed by the fact he pawed high at people time and again instead of getting people around the legs.
Sam Tomkins is smaller then Smith yet he is a superb tackler because he has no fear and a great technique.

| Good luck to Tim for wherever he goes.
I think we as a club are better with Sam than Tim by some distance, but one thing that did impress me with Tim was not what he did with the first team but when he was playing in the reserves. He really mucked in and showed some of the young lads his knowledge. Hopefully they will benefit from his attitude in those games and with them for the rest of there careers.

| Smith wanted to put himself back into the shop window in back in the game in general, Wigan gave him that chance so i hope he will be eternally greatful for that.
I have no doubt he will return to a NRL club next year and be a success.
Cheers Tim, sorry your time at Wigan was cut short with injury.

Overrated, how can a player who can't run or tackle be any good. Just cos he can pass.

| Be interesting to see if any NRL club will touch him.
Overall i thought he was pretty disapointing when you take into consideration his off the field issues which im not convinced are a thing of the past.
Perhaps the pubs and clubs of Wigan will miss him but the Wigan fans wont.

Think that is the crucial part, he has undoubted ability, but was never a 6 for a start, i would never understand why he was used as second receiver at times, in my opinion TL is far more suited to that role.
He will not be missed even if he is not replaced.

| Can't defend him too much but he was unfortunate to be playing in a very average team (which he contributed to).
He has vision during games and could pick out runners with a perfect pass but as mentioned by others passing just aint enough in this current Wigan squad.
We needed a half that could lead and organise this team and dominate the opposition halfs.
If he had signed for Saints or Leeds his defence may not have been an issue and he probably would have come across as a much better player.
I'm sure he'll get fixed up in the NRL, with his previous reputation in Aus and the fact that he played for Wigan, which is still an impressive inclusion on his CV (despite what bitter and twisted fans of other clubs may try to say).
He will need to get a grip of his off field social activities otherwise he may end up back at square one in Aus.
Good luck to him but I'm affaid it just didn't work out at Wigan.

| He is a classic scrum half. An Andy Gregory type. Not a runner but someone who could organise, had good vision and could pass a ball better than anybody else in the game....
...and we played him at 6.
I said this in the winter, so, if I saw this then why couldnt Nobby see it?
By no means am I defending (apt) his poor defence. It was terrible almost unforgivable but a month or so in the reserves sorted him out and he came back and put a string of about 3 or 4 belting performances together.
The last good game he played for us was against Saints at Murrayfield. He did what Barrett never managed to do he tore Saints apart. Credit where it is due he was awesome and it made you wonder that if he can do that he can do anything.
After the Saints game it went slightly downhill again. The Hull KR game stood out for me, it was a tough, close, hard fought game. We played well that day but Smith did not want to know which lost us the game IMO.
Tim Smith's has an ability that is a rare thing these days. The skill levels are declining in Rugby League and I thought given his flaws it was good for the game that he was about, cos his attacking ability was something else.
People are right when they say he will not be missed, he won't because he had vital flaws to his game and we as an average team cannot afford to carry those flaws.
