We all 'hoped' for that when we signed Vaeeliki.
Trophies are not won with hope.
Mr.Wane wasn't very happy with Mr.Gelling last Friday.

All that shows is that they were kicking to his wing more than Charnley's, so he got more carries. Metres per carry were much the same for both wingers.

It's good to have someone who makes a lot of metres, who will keep looking for work and who returns the ball in a direct manner but it's not the be all and end all.
I mean for those who think Gelling's metres made make him a must have on the wing does the fact that Charnley only made 67 metres mean he isn't a good winger or isn't as good as Gelling?
He'll have to show some quick improvement over the next few games because he looked more out of place against Huddersfield than he did when he first played on the left wing.
He could be a fantastic winger if he sorted out his positioning and finishing but with all the talk about poor goal kicking running the risk of losing us tight games the same could be said of poor finishing.
Obviously the fact that he is used like an extra forward down the middle, just like Richards, is what makes him the preferred choice on the wing. Wane should know best of course, but he seemed massively frustrated with Gelling during the Huddersfield game.

As I said on the stats thread teams seem to kick to Gellings wing a lot and they obviously see him as a weakness and see that he is slow to turn. The huge metres to be made with kick returns would obviously inflate his stats an awful lot. The fact Charnley only has 9 shows that they barely kicked to Charnley at all.

Perhaps not better, but good enough to deserve a chance to compete for a place, IMO. Russell is getting rave reviews from the Hull fans, though admittedly at fullback, which is his best position.

| There's only King in the reserves who seems ready to step up. Jack Murphy has moved back to fullback now Russell is on loan while Shae Lyon-Fraser hasn't exactly been too impressive.
Long term Burgess has the most potential but he was back in the under 18's over the weekend.

Russell played on the wing against Salford a while back and had a stinker by all accounts. Missed more tackles than he made. Say what you want about Gelling in attack but defensively he's been rock solid, which is the best way to get in Wane's good books I imagine

He looks exceptional with ball in hand but he's not great positionally yet so I'm happy to let him stay at Hull for as long as possible and make his mistakes up there. I'm sure he'll start another game or two for us before the end of the season though. Once the Challenge Cup semi is out of the way next month we have a run of what you would call "winnable" games against teams that are outside of the top 8 so I imagine Wane will look to give one or two key players a rest, Tomkins included

| He was quiet, but he still ran the ball in well. He was out of position in attack once more when Carmont wanted him to come inside, but he was still error free.

| I honestly think Anthony Gelling will get better and better, he's had a solid run in the team on the wing but I see his long-term future at centre if he sorts his supposed defensive frailties out.
I would be tempted to "rest" him though and put him in the under 20's and give Ryan King a go soon.
I don't think Wane will do this especially with two big matches coming up against Leeds and Catalans but we have seen a few youngsters over the years have shining debuts in big matches.

Our hand could be forced with the potential bans to Mossop, Hock and Tuson and injury to HH. Gelling may well end up in the 2nd row rotation with Hughes and King is the next cab off the rank. Wait and see I suppose

Like the much maligned Price, he's very good in defence and solid in attack. His face just doesn't fit - mainly because neither is a blisteringly fast winger. I think, long term, he's a Centre. He'll be competing with Thornley next season when Carmont retires.
To me it's time King got a game out there to see what he can do. It won't hurt Gelling to have a rest and he's shown all he has to his game at the moment - which King could probably better.

| I like Gelling from what i've seen of him. He's a rough diamond who'll hopefully come good in the next couple of years or so. With the players and coaching staff around him I'm sure they'll get the best out of him.
Wasn't he still an amatuer last year, and only gone pro when he signed for us?

hes an odd one, i think second row is the easy and obvious choice and perhaps the safest thing to do during our current forward crisis, but we are hardly struggling with second rows in the grand scheme of things, so spending the time shaping him into an outside back, while not going to hurt his chances of potentially ending up in the second row, seems like the most potentially rewarding option.

| Lots of way OTT criticism of Gelling on this thread. Given that (a) most of our recent overseas signings have had trouble settling in and (b) he's out of position Gelling has been doing well.
He makes a lot of hard yards for a back and another big effort from him on Friday would really help make up for the missing first choice forwards.

Well said.
After watching the Bradford / Leeds game and seeing Pryce it has made be appreciate Gelling even more.
If Pryce showed some heart he would be a dangerous player but he just dies in the tackle far too easily, nobody can accuse Gelling of that.
He will prove a shrewd signing imo.

| He didn't do much wrong again at the weekend. There was the opportunity he blew when Carmont wanted him back on the inside and he was pushed in to touch. I don't mind him blowing odd tries as long as he isn't letting them in and we are scoring plenty with other players.
I think Wane will persevere with him as a winger for as long as Pat is out. He obviously feels King isn't ready and would rather have Russel playing in his favoured position on loan at Hull.
