Melbourne have been doing it more than ever this season with Billy Slater now that they have lost Cooper Cronk.

| Adam O'Brien getting mentioned in Aussie press as a contender. He is assistant at Melbourne and credited with the improvement in Storms attack.

| I like the team that NSW proposed. The problem for me is that Sam has been at his most effective this season operating at fullback. I know people will say he hasn't had much of a chance in the halves, but when he has been there he's not really done anything.

Yeah lets play Sam in the halves. Let's limit our best ball player and attacker to one side of the field only. Let's make him do twice as much tackling to boot.
Clear madness to think of moving Sam from fb.

| I know nothing of this O’Brien bloke but somebody with fresh ideas who could bring improvements out of players in the way that Holbrook has at Saints and Maguire did here in 2010 would be very welcome.

| Agree with NK about O'Brien. No previous connection with Wigan and able to put his new ideas into practice. Recent stints of Aussie assistants over here with Holbrook, Price and Woolford suggest these guys have plenty to offer.
Lam seems to be the name in the frame, O'Brien would be my choice over Lam and Furner anytime as they are "going back".

Yeah he’s the assistant at Melbourne, he was the one who was tasked with improving their attack after they lost to Cronulla in the GF, last year they played some very good rugby and he implemented new attacking structures that saw them score over 630 points in the regular season, would be a breath of fresh air at Wigan and would certainly help Williams

| I don’t catch a great deal of the NRL but I saw a little bit of the Souths vs West’s game at the weekend and the difference to our recent games was night and day. The bodies in motion, the ball movement and intensity were so far in advance of what we’re seeing in superleague it’s untrue.
No wonder these Aussie coaches are coming in and seeing success just from implementing some basics. I looked at Saints last week and it wasn’t anything overly complicated that set them apart from us. It was Australian like basics. They ran hard, tackled harder, moved the ball accurately, supported the ball carrier in attack and covered their mates backside in defence. All the small things have a knock on effect and break down the opposition all over the field. I’ve not been caught up in the Danny Richardson hype just yet but he could’ve played in a dinner suit last week. He’s being given the freedom of the field via the culmination of those basics. He’s not terrorising teams and his basic skills aren’t perfect but it’s doing a job.

Spot on, this is why we neeed an nrl assistant imo, we are desperately lacking in basics at times and someone like Holbrook would benefit us massively

| Wigan will have whittled down the coaching candidates to three or four. They will, as part of their "interview" have done a critique /analysis of at least one game.I think that game was last Thursday.
They will then make THE decision.
Any candidates overseas will either have seen the game on tv or sent a recording to analyse.

Given I know that if you post on here with information from the club it will be spot on I find this very worrying.
It has been some time since we knew Wane was going and yet we have still to appoint a coach for next year?!
Most of the clubs are wrapping up their transfer business for next year, the fact that if we have without the new coach leading that is for me a major issue, if we haven’t and are waiting till the new coach is signed we have missed the boat on most of the players available.

| TBH I've watched NRL and been quite up on the players for a long time.
Coaches not so much.
One poster, can't remember who mentioned O'brian a couple of months back after Wane said he was going, they did mark his name.
Good olde internet means you can find everything out.
He looks odds-on to replace Bellamy, but hopefully, that is in a couple of years time and we can get him for two years.
Like Madge part II.
Would be a wonderful signing.

Makes sense. Watch a game which is guaranteed to be on TV so everyone can see it. Write a detailed report analysis, who ever seems to perform the best passes than part of the process, hence why Edwards was there.

| The article about O’Brien replacing Bellamy was from May. Bellamy has subsequently signed an extension. So as far as replacing Bellamy immediately all bets are off.

To be honest, Jon, the time to be worried was when Wane handed his notice in mid-season.
It should have been obvious to all of us that it was going to cause the sort of problems you mention.
But I'm not sure how quickly Wigan were supposed to act. The fact that within a couple of months they've whittled down the candidates to a final select few sounds like a fairly expediated process to me.
