Exactly. It won't be us. Would you rather pay to have the roof on your house fixed or get someone else to pay? IF anything happened to The DW we'd be fine just as we were when we got a shiny new supporters bar after it flooded last year.

Exactly, One of the few great positives to renting and not owning. Whilst other clubs are busy forking money out on repairing stadiums that can't handle the wind we can just sit back and watch Whelan fork out for the DW to be fixed.
Well you really got one over on us there..................

Your correct, St Helen's have life cycle costing to consider and with structural issues incurring at this stage we could see maintenance cost soar over the years, that's one thing our club doesn't have to worry about financially.

| Their are benefits to renting than owning I agree, but knowing that if said landlord decided he had had enough they could terminate the 50 year lease you signed in a month's notice and then where would that leave you? and like any kind of tenancy if the reason for terminating the lease is valid and legal then you would not have a legal leg to stand on. As it stands at the moment though with our stadium still being brand new-ish all work is covered by guarantee/warranty and will be repaired under said guarantee/warranty at the contractors/sub-contractors own cost.
But definately agree to the advantages of renting

Yep, because Wigan Warriors are the sort of tenants who, when they aren't keeping the stadium alive for half the season, are causing so much trouble to its owners that it can only be a matter of time before they are lawfully evicted.
That's a mighty big 'if' you quoted there.

More scousers clutching at straws Cruncher. If Wigan were only able to use the DW entirely at the whim of Uncle Dave and could be chucked out at a moment's notice no auditor would sign off our accounts on a going concern basis (and of course it would have been bonkers for IL to buy the club in the first place if that was the property position).
Great stuff though. I wonder what comedic gems are coming our way next from Merseyside. Can't wait!

funds were given to DW to help fund it for both clubs by the council and he would have to buy out the lease as if we are upholding our side he would have no right to termiante it without compensating us.

| Frankly the arguments over the advantages and disadvantages of owning and leasing respectively have been done to death in various threads on this and other boards.
All that I would say is that I do not believe that there is a single Saints supporter who would rather we play at a rented stadium with better facilities than our own Langtree Park whatever the serious teething problems.
In contrast there are many Wigan supporters who have been honest enough to admit in earlier threads that they would prefer that Wigan RL play at a stadium that they owned rather than the DW.

My apologies for a slight derail, however, I belive the arguments over purchasing and leasing haven't quite been fully considered:
Purchasing:
The math on the Paul McCartney-Heather Mills divorce is as follows:

Leasing:

Regardless of what fans may think, it ultimately may depend on whether you can afford the life-long upkeep of your stadium.
I'm not saying Saints can't, but constantly having to fork out for costly repair bills would be one undeniable argument against owning your own stadium.

Where has anyone stopped you expressing your views? You have your opinion and I'll have mine. There's a big difference between people having differing opinions and people not being allowed to express their views. Or are you just upset that no one agrees?
MrSmith, You have a valid point. And I along with most other people wouldn't mind having our own home but regardless am quite happy as we are. It just so happens that in this particular hypothetical scenario, (lets remember the DW isn't actually damaged... It can withstand a bit of wind.... ) being a tenant works massively in our favour and is one of the few plus points.

We don't know what the issues with the roof have been. All that may be required are a few more fasteners to hold the aluminium in place. There could be something more serious behind the problem. I doubt anyone outside the club will get to know the truth. But one thing that is very likely is that there will be a warranty on the building work and so the damage should cost Saints precisely nothing, except in lost revenue from the shop which closed for a day. But even that is quite likely to be made up at some future date as fans will simply return on another day to purchase what they intended to purchase when the shop had to close.
