| Quote ="cadoo"Whatever happens regarding Bailey one thing the club should not do IMO is just release Bailey and not replace him.
We have a very young squad and in particular a very young but promising set of forwards. I think it is crucial for their development that they have experienced professionals around them to look up to and to take some of the weight off their shoulders so they can show what they can really do. We saw with Lee Mossop on Sunday how he struggled playing a big, touch and experienced Bradford pack alongside a very young Wigan pack. Joel Tomkins (22) Harrison Hansen (23). I don't think we can afford to lose Phil Bailey and Gareth Hock - and just have Sean O'loughlin with young kids. Saints are so successful in bringing youngsters through because they have a good environment and the right squad to do it. We have seen the results they have had and we need to do the same.
I don't think we should re-sign Bailey I think we should replace him though with someone with experience (which Bailey has) but of better quality. Bailey is just a solid player, which is not a bad thing but from an overseas player (even though he will come off the quota) you expect better and I believe he is one of our top earners. Six figure salary I have heard from people on this board. He is not worth that.
David Kidwell and Frank Puletua are both off contract and would be ideal. They wont come cheap but with Phil Bailey's and Gareth Hock's wages we should be more than capable of being able to afford one of these players while being able to re-sign our best youngsters. Now I understand it is really easy to just throw names into the hat and there is much more to it bringing one of those players over. Visa being granted, past injures, if they want to come over, will they settle etc etc
So if for whatever reason we can't bring in anyone this season then we can't just release Bailey and go with Mossop, Tomkins, Hansen and Lockers for me. We need an experienced head to take some of the pressure off the young lads. So only on an one year extension and (if rumours are true) a reduced salary would I re-sign Bailey. We are better off with Phil Bailey for a season, if we can't find a replacement than releasing him and not finding a replacement and just throw all the kids in with a young pack.'"
I agree but I’d personally prefer to keep Coley over Bailey for next season imo.
He’d be a good cover between prop and 2nd row as well as his defence is almost if not on par with Bailey’s and his go forward is also better.
The make up of our back row is screaming for a player who can put his head down and make hard yards. We’ve got two talented play makers in Joel and Lockers as well as a tackling machine in Hansen but who can we really count on to come off the bench and do a hard spell driving it in and tackling hard as well? Coley for me would just balance our back row better than Bayley.
I’d like to see this pack next season
Webb
Riddell
Griffin
Coley
Tomkins
Lockers
Feka
Fielden
Mcilorum
Hansen
With Prescott/Mossop swapping in when others are out of form or injured.
O’Carroll & Farrell out on loan.

I don't want to see Darrell Griffin anywhere near a Wigan shirt.
Andy Coley would be useful to us if we couldn't find a replacement for Bailey in that he could bolster us in the second row and can still do a job at prop forward. Only if we could not find a replacement for Bailey and had we brought in another prop forward would I keep Andy Coley.
Our pack for next season (if we could not find a replacement for Bailey)
NEW prop
Mark Riddell
Paul Prescott
Andy Coley
Joel Tomkins
Sean O'loughlin
------------------------------------
Michael McIlorum
Feka Paleaasina
Stuart Fielden
Harrison Hansen/Lee Mossop
Eamon O'carroll to go out on loan along with Liam Farrell.

| If Coley wanted to go i'd take Griffin as a replacment but i'd still want another top class prop on top of that.
If we keep Coley and sign Griffin i won't be happy.

i dont think he is either but IL quite publicy stated that we would only make 'Top Quality' signings and i for one dont think that Griffin is top quality.

Not top quality at all and certainly no better than Coley. Will bring nothing more than what Prescott, O'carroll and Coley does for us.
Waste of cap space and waste of time. A signing that would take us backwards.
Please let's not try and talk him up.

If Griffin signs he won't be the only new face in the front row.
On Griffin, the bloke is 6ft 5 and nearly 19 stone. He narrowly missed out on the 24 man squad for England last year. Has been inconsistent this year though.

if he comes in along with the other 'rumoured' signing and coley is retained and bailey released then i think that would be an adequate situation to be in

I disagree.
Griffin on top form is one of the best frontrowers in Super League. It appears as if he has not been fully focused on Huddersfield, whether that's because he knows he's off to Wigan in 2010 I don't know. I am aware that we have been in contact with Huddersfield about Griffin but have not heard that he's signed.

Even with his size he has never impressed me. In fact I have never taken much notice of him. Neither have the England selectors really.
If he is signed I will give him a chance and hope that he proves me wrong and puts in top performances every week and bullys opposition packs.

Well we will have to agree to disagree. I certainly can't remember him ever being up to the standard of James Graham, Adrian Morley, Jamie Peacock etc I have never taken notice of Darrell Griffin in super league and when Wigan play Huddersfield the prop forward that stands out for me is Eorl Crabtree not Griffin. My only recollections of him playing is being sin binned a few times.

| If Griffin is coming to Wigan and there is another forward on his way too then the second bloke has to be quality.
Griffin is Griffin, we've all seen him he's a big man but a quality forward.
As for salaries. Smith has gone and no doubt Hock won't be with us for the next two years so that's a deal of dosh available.
If Bailey is retained then I reckon IL will have offered him a deal that other clubs would offer him. My guess is Bailey would accept it. That could be additional cash available.
With or without Bailey there should be sufficient cash available for quality players.

| If Griffin & another prop arrived, I would question why we are resigning Coley, unless he is to move to 2nd row and Bailey leave.
But given the choice I would keep Bailey over Coley, especially if 2 props are being brought in.

Maybe Coley is going to 2nd row and the choice of getting rid of Bailey is to free up a quota spot??
I've no idea whats gonna happen, i just hope IL pulls something out the bag.

I think at the moment Bailey is worth his Quota spot on the basis of experience and leadership. He is far more vocal than Coley so if it was a choice from them 2 which would be kept in the 2nd row I would actually pick Bailey, Quota or not

| Here is how i see things at the moment, no real inside info just putting together credible lines that i have been told from what i consider to be pretty reliable sources, non of who have any working relationship with Wigan.
Could very well be putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 5.
As i undertand it we are signing Griffin and an NRL hard man Prop/secondrow. I have heard no mention of a half but that is not to say we are not looking for one, i think and indeed hope if the right man is not out there regards quality in the halves we will stick with TL and Sam Tomkins.
The next bit is speculation, but i would anticipate if we are bringing in who i think we are ie 2 Props, 1 who can play secondrow that 1 of Bailey or Coley will move on, i think this will be depend on our ability to bring in a non federation trained quality half. If we can bailey will go, if we cannot Coley will go.
On the Griffin story, if we do sign him as a support prop to our NRL prop i think it will be a great bit of business. The lad was playing some fantastic rugby at Wakefield and Hudds, his face no longer fits at Hudds which could be to our benefit. He is a big lad aggressive and not too long ago was being talked up like LMS is now, gained an England Cap, but through aq personality clash is out of the picture at Hudds.
I think many will be quite pleased with him if he comes, adds some much needed size and aggression up front.

If the pack is of the right quality we don't need a new halfback imo. Sam Tomkins and Leuluai look to be striking up a great relationship and i think we're seeing that Sam has abit more to his game then just running. He's doing a good job leading the side round the park and his kicking game is looking solid. Leuluai is on top form at the moment and again looks to have matured in his alround game. His 2 passes to Richards over the past 2 games have been sensational.
If injury struck one of them that could lead to a problem so maybe a back up signing would be the way to go.
