I agree, compare that commentary from SKY for French's second try against Channel 4 for the Field last minute try against Salford. Apples and Oranges.

What a difference! Even Eddie and Stevo would have wet their pants with that try last night!

I had to mute it.
I understand they need to pump the underdog up to make the game more interesting to neutral viewers.
Every Wigan pass was forward, everyone was offside from kicks.
The tipping point for me was them saying Salford had Wigan right where they want them in the game (despite being 6-0 and not threatening our line once).

| I thought it was close to being the worst commentary I've seen since the heady days of Eddie and Stevo. The ludicrous fawning over Salford, who were visibly struggling with the way Wigan were running them around as early as 20 mins in, exposed a group of men who really don't understand what they are watching, or choose not to. Was there anyone in the UK apart from that small group (and Sarge, bless!) who didn't expect the Wigan deluge in the second half?

| Seems like Sky have given up on RL, mentioned it on another thread, their recent advert for the 'Great British summer of sport" RL didn't get a mention, doesn't even show the SL logo at the end of it

| Didn't see the game so don't know who it was. Iv'e seen the tries this morning but with no commentary. I will guess it was Bill Arthur though. He is just like Eddie. Sounds disappointed when Wigan score a try. He get's players names wrong EVERY match and even gets mixed up with players who have different ethnicity and couldn't look any different. O'Connor is also utterly terrible. Dave Woods is good. He is a Wigan fan but you wouldn't know it when he commentates as he is impartial but it was blindingly obvious that Eddie was a Saints fan and Stevo loved everything Yorkshire. Stuart Pyke is easily the best and most knowledgeable on the Sky team but he sounds like he commentates with a Werthers Original in his gob. Can we just club together and sod Sky off and give it all to Channel 4. Channel 4 has been dead a long time. Regular rugby league would be brilliant, especially on a Sunday afternoon.

I couldn't wait to see again the full length of the field try scored after brilliant inter passing between French and Field. On the night I immediately said try of the season. It was a fantastic try.
Watching the highlights on Wigan TV I couldn't believe the (lack of) commentary on the try. The guy didn't start commentating on it until French had made 40 metres after starting facing his own line. The most low key commentating I've ever heard on such a fantastic try. I'm glad I ditched my Sky Sports subscription many years ago. Dismal.

Unfortunately Rugby League is tied in with the SKY tv money. Clubs would go bust without it.
I don't think Channel 4 are paying anything for their coverage deal - or if they are it's minimal. It's more to do with bringing the sport to a free-to-air audience than any financial benefit for the clubs.

| Really impressive last night. Whilst the second half was scintillating, I was pleased with the first half. Salford came to play and pushed us all the way in the first 40. If that was against Saints, Catalans, Hudds I think the pundits would have been praising the intensity but alas..
I think it has to be said, aside from the obvious back 3 being excellent, I thought Isa was brilliant. Definitely proved his selection right (also me wrong!) and showed that he might nail down that right centre spot for the next few weeks.
It had a real special feeling last night being in the away end, something great is building I feel.

| We're in a good spot to go for the top 2 now as well. I think we have 7 home games to come with 4 away along with the Magic weekend. Away games against the rest of the top 5 all played.

It would be great to make that top 2 for sure. The home games really should help, especially if we can rack up some points to help the points difference. I’d still have Saints as favourites for the Grand Final but it feels as though there are 4 genuine contenders for it now and that’s good for the league.

| Just something I’d like to point out, whilst not scoring loads of tries and getting 3 man of steel points every week, Field is still having a massive influence on the attack.
Have a look at Frenchs second try from the scrum, the centre Lafai is terrified by Fields pace and crashes in leaving Isa in acres of space to put french in the corner.
Whilst the flashy stuff is slowly down, his threat is creating so much space for others.
Keep it up Jai!

The last try came from the defence pushing up to stop Field as well - Smith smart enough to counter this with a great ball over the top.

There were 3 tries on Friday were the defence either shot out to cover him or cramped and numbered up on Field which created space for others
It seemed to be a tactic in the CC final as well, Smiths 1sy half try, Field is on Wide wrap around and the defence is so aware of that they pushed out and left a Tunnel on Fields inside for Smith to support into.
2nd half Smith exploited the outside to Thornley because 2/3 defenders were intent on picking up field who was running an inside line this time and the space was outside with Thornley & French
Great coaching, Great play from Field, Great work from players in particular Smith to play around Field and look to take the opportunities in the space that Fields unselfish running is creating.

| Smith is turning into the half he threatened to be early doors. He plays at the line and has excellent vision to add to his tremendous kicking game. He's also become a running threat in his own right and has scored some fabulous tries recently, not least his fantastic run for his try in the CC final.
Field doesn't get enough credit for what he does off the ball. It's understandable that his length of the field stuff is what makes the headlines but he's a tough little player. Not afraid to wear a tackle in attack or put himself in front of much bigger players in defence. I find it laughable how some Saints fans have convinced themselves that he's deficient in these areas! Still, if it makes them feel better...
It's noticeable how he changes his game playing at 6. He's looking to link up far more rather than doing it himself all the time. I'd like to see more of him there as, not only do I feel he has lots of improvement in him in that position, but I think it would benefit his link play when playing at fullback.

| Field puts an enormous amount of work running off the ball.
He's almost always on the shoulder of anyone who looks like they will make a half break.
Not seen anyone back up like that and scare the opposition so much just by being there in a long time.
Fair play to Smith for making the most of the space Field gives and I'm guessing the work on the training pitch.
Field also pulls off a nice one on one tackle on one of Salford's forwards who broke through the line.
Not bad for a one trick pony who can't tackle.....

People will, naturally, point towards the Saints game as one to watch out for, but the biggest game we've got in the diary is undoubtedly Catalan's at home.
That away trip was probably the worst we've played all season & it's not a happy hunting ground for us. Quite simply put - we need to finish above them & doing a number on them at home will be a massive boost. I hope the club go a bit tactical in regards to getting people through the door for it.

Amazing what playing behind a strong pack and with an attacking structure not put together by a clown can achieve.

There are some very odd comments about Field on redvee - reminds me of the days when Offiah was "only good because he's fast and all he does is score tries". Errrr, well yes.
He's a very, very dangerous player with the ball. I do think he lacks a bit ball playing wise (seems to throw quite a few panic/bad passes on the end of breaks) but that's probably just a natural desire to push the play sometimes. His prescence is enough to scare teams and create space for others.
Will be very interesting to see how he goes later in the season when the plays are more well known, the games are more of an arm wrestle and tracks aren't as quick - but maybe that's just the optimist in me.

I suppose it's a compliment in a way. As you say, it's a criticism levelled mainly at dangerous players. It's strange that it only seems to be Saints fans who suffer this particular malaise. Fans of other clubs seem to be more than happy to acknowledge how he's been a joy to watch at times. As usual I exclude yourself etc from this observation but posters like Saddened et al have made themselves look like spoiled schoolchildren at times.
The 'bad pass' comments seem to stem from one game. I can't remember him being any worse than anyone else in this regard otherwise. You'd think Johnny Lomax never threw a bad pass to lose Saints a challenge cup semi final to hear some people talk
Check out the interplay for the French/Field try from the Salford game for an example of great passing interplay. Not sure there's another pairing in Superleague who could better that.
