Last night I was reading this thread and there was alink to the Cockney Liar!

I made the mistake of clicking on it and wasting 20mins of my life looking at the most absolutely disgusting comments from Football fans on various subjects inc Wigan Rugby and Yet they have the Nerve to call us "Vermin, Knuckle Draggers" etc etc!!!!!!!
It's no wonder what happened at West Ham the other night occurred!
Even then the Footy fans blame the Police for there not being enough of them!!!!!!!!!
We all know that if there was No Police at the Footy nearly every match would descend into a Free for all !!!!

It was amazing how many cocky, aggressive posts there were on various subjects all mouthing off and threatening each other and yet we all know that they are exactly like all the Chavvy knoobs you see on every street corner! Full of hot air and Nowt to back it up!

One post said something about Rugby being "Soft Whinging Barstewards!"!

I'll tell you what, ask em to come down to the Bridge or Pats and put a Metal detector on the gate and say No blades past here but theres a few lads waiting for you on the inside and We'd soon see who the soft Barstewards were then!!!!!!!

I've told numerous people (And a few posters on here & you know who you are!

) that there's no middle ground on this as far as they are concerned so the lines been drawn and that's fine by me!

I know which side I am on!

They are starting to hit the skids now and they know it. Panic-stricken by their unavoidable slide into mediocrity they will resort to what they do best... attacking Wigan RLFC.

I too took some time to trawl throough some of the posts on the Latics message board and was apalled by the vitriol which is poured out there.

I sincerely hope that this is from a small minority and I feel sorry for the true Latics supporters who have to put up with this behaviour. I have some friends who are really decent people who have supported Latics all their life who wouldn't dream of descending to this sort of level. All they want to do is enjoy their stay in the premier league whilst it lasts; but being there seems to have given some of their fans ideas above their station.

I suspect that most of the rugby and football fans have little interest in the other side but don't hate them. I blame it all on the premier league.

Both sets of fans should fear the premier league. Latics are not going to stay there and will be affected , like rugby, because the hysterical blanket coverage in all media is swaying more and more youngsters to the idea that it is better to watch a load of foreigners play another load of foreigners, either live or on TV, rather than watch you own proper home town team no matter what shaped balls they play with.

You may have gathered that I think the premier league is a carbuncle on the face of British sport. It has badly affected the national football team, all other clubs in the football league, and making minority sports like ours even more obscure to the general public.

In my honest opinion it has brought the worst out of the players who play in it, it has brought the worst out of some of the Latics fans who support it and it has brought the worst out of club chairman who try to deal with the pressure of competing in it. And the root of all this is money, money and money,It is the worst thing ever to happen to the British sporting scene in my lifetime

That's what happens when you don't have any real rivals in your own sport.
To be honest I think it's a great thing having a Premier League football team in the town. I've never had a problem with Latics. What I can't stand is a section of their so called fans.

hoops youre spot on in what you say but its not just rugby league and the latics that should fear the premier league even the likes of aston villa,everton,newcastle and spurs should be feared as well because if the money men get thier own way the next step will be a european league and that really will be a closed shop for only the very richest and biggest clubs in europe.
as i say there are sections of both clubs supporters who are eqaully as bigotted against each other,my personal view is that maurice lyndsey is more to blame than anyone else {maybe eqaulled by whelan}
his attitude towards the latics in the 80s stunk as much as whelans does towards the rugby now and this has led to a division of sorts between the towns sporting teams.
myself im proud to be from wigan and hope both teams can do as well as they possiblly can

I hate to tell you this, but anyone who inclines towards Latics on this forum, even cautiously as you are, is going to get very short shrift.

There's been far too much damage done to Wigan RL's reputation - or at least attempted damage - by the the mere presence of Wigan Athletic in recent years (and that's before we even consider the concerted campaign to undermine us), for anyone other than those who support both teams to adopt the 'understanding' approach that you recommend.

And frankly, anythying Maurice Lindsay may have said way back in the 1980s - which is a like a quarter of a century ago - is neither here nor there, given that Latics were completely inconsequential at the time, both to Wigan and the rest of the world, and given that Maurice is no longer anything to do with the rugby.

If you genuinely want to reunite these two clans, hinting that you think Wigan RL are the cause of this divide - when Wigan RL are the original creators and long-term propogators of this town's sporting glory, and therefore have an inalienable right to hold pole position here - then I'd suggest you're going the wrong way about it.

im not suggesting wigan rugby league club are the cause of the divide im suggesting maurice lyndsey was responsible and i agree that this was quarter of a century ago as well,the ironic thing is that now maurice has jumped ship to the latics,i understand that people on here dont like latics and thats thier perogative as is the morons on latics boards that post rubbish about the rugby club,my point is thier surely has to be some reasonable people on both sides who can see that theres no point in either clubs sets of supporters arguing with each other as it is fruitless,pointless,and frankly childish,ill continue to hope both of wigans teams well and hope both prosper as for people letting bygones be bygones i wont hold my breath at this rate northern ireland will find harmony quicker than wigans sporting divide will

To be honest, I don't know why Wigan RL fans SHOULD be supportive of Wigan Athletic.

First of all, they're cuckoos in our nest. For all that it may be short-lived, they've taken a little bit of the shine off Wigan town's rugby league heritage, something I personally can never forgive them for.

In addition to that, many Wigan fans who also like football were already committed to supporting other clubs (who have no beef at all with Wigan RL), so those lads surely can't be expected to give unswerving support to Latics?

We've also had the hate campaign conducted against Wigan by jumped up little Latics farts - over a period of many years, in particular during our glory years, which to some was tantamount to the sort of treason that in political terms once got people hanged, drawn and quartered. In a world of enemies, there are none more hateful than those within.

Sorry ... I just don't buy it that merely because Wigan Athletic are in Wigan, we should support or even like them.

Why be bothered with them then?
Honestly, they have nothing to do with us and don't repreesnt the town in terms of either history or society.
My sport is rugby league so I have about as much interest in Latics as I do for Wigan rugby union or Orrell.

how have wigan athletic taken the spotlight from wigan rugby league club?
im not asking you to like latics personally or even like them.
my point is that the bigots out there on both sides must realise there are some people in our town who want both teams to do well.
the people in wigan who support other football teams only do so for one of two reasons one of wich is a family affiliation to another team because there families from that town/city or that they are glory hunters,and before you point the fact out i know that some latics fans ecspecially the jcl brigade are also glory hunters but this is what rising through the divisions brings,not saying i agree with glory hunting but youll never stop it.

I make no distinction between what the Vichy collaborators tried to do to rugby league in France and what the warped JCL's from Pimbo and Digmoor are trying to do to Wigan RL.

Yet people still hark on about all these issues which happened so long ago that they have little relevance to today.

Let's move on folks, life is too difficult at present without dragging around issues from the past. What's done has been done, we are where we are now, let's make the best of it.

We as rugby fans have to deal with the fact that there is another reasonably successful professional sporting team in the town, as do latics fans.

We can live together, the vast majority of fans accept that. Those that spew out bile on the latics message board aren't worth bothering about, let's not stoop down to their level, even in retaliation.

orrell lad i think youd find most clued up latics fans of that era don thate wigan rl but they do hate maurice lyndsey and with good reason,and they hate him as much now even though he is on the board of the latics,the problem the latics face is that a lot of the jcls are fickle and in the event of a relegation or two they wont be seen for dust a problem im sure a lot of the older warriors fans will remember after relegation during the fairburn era when crowds dipped at cp after relegation.
there in lies the problem of wiganers while both teams hardcore supporters are to be respected its the fickle ones i cant stand who only go when thier team is winning and dont stick with them through the difficult times

If I meet even one person who says to me "Wigan used to be a rugby town, but now it's a football town", I consider it a problem. I'm sure you'd agree with me on that.

And unfortunately I have met people like that. In most cases it's folk who've never been north of Watford Gap, which kind of renders their view irrelevant (on just about everything), but I'm sure you'll allow me the conceit to still be cheesed off that there us anyone at all saying this sort of thing.

Ned refers to people who don't like Latics as "bigots". I would argue that Wigan are one of the great British RL clubs - in terms of results, history, the club's presence, it's personality, its fame and reputation. I'm sure even die-hard Saints fans wouldn't begrudge us that. I don't say we're the greatest, just one of the greats.

And in that respect, it's not being bigoted to say that we've earned the right, over decades of hard-fought victories, tto be the town's primary sports club - it's stating an undeniable reality. And if Latics fans - however reasonable and friendly they are - don't like that, I don't care.
