You shouldn't summise that all people are skivving.


What should I do with the kids who can't go to school as it's shut, leave them in front of the Wii and a couple of butties for 9 hours why I go to work? As opposed to a "free day" the best I'm going to get is to somehow hope my manager will allow me to use my "precious" holiday entitlement for the last two days instead of myself being docked pay. I'm desperate to go back to work as my work is piling up (physical products) and there is no resource to assist.
The best thing is I have not yet had confirmation whether the school is open yet so I'm left in limbo. Missus can't take time off as she's paid by the hour and we have no cover for care!

So basically I'm ed, using up holiday's when I don't want to as I'd rather use them up in July & Aug like the rest of us.

Just to join in. I left my house in Hampshire (no snow about) on Monday at 0530, drove round the M25 to Essex for an 0800 meeting went from there North around the M25 to Enfield for another meeting which finished at 1800, then drove to Sheffield arriving at 2130, had some food went to bed and got up to find my car buried. Took me and some other poor sod 1 hour to dig our cars out and grit the hotel carpark slope to get out. Cancelled meeting in Thornecliffe (Sheffield) and started home to Hampshire, took 4 hours to get to Nottingham on the M1 due to the snow then got caught on the M3 in the snows in the South - total trip from Sheffield to Hampshire 9 hours. Got up this morning to go to London to meet a very important client to find my car buried again (8 inches of snow). 0615 I walk 2 miles to where my boss is waiting for me to drive me to the meeting. Now had the meeting to find my boss is not driving back the 60 miles past my house and i now have to get to Waterloo from Greenford on the edge of London to get back to Hampshire, trains are ruined and it's 3 connections to home, no taxis can really move around Basingstoke (where I live) so it might be a 4 mile walk to my house in what my missus is now telling me is 1 foot deep snow.


Oh and I am the proud owner of a b*ggered hip and 2 knackered knees which should help with the stroll.

I love it when it snows you know. Still, soon be Xmas.

we work as a NATION.
we BUILD gritters, salters, ploughs etc,
we have enough engineers out of work from closed down industries havnt we??
we kick start the economy also by doing this.
funding? in the first instant we use money we spend on building nuclear missiles.
if we have fleets of unused gritters for years , so be it.....after all we have stockpiles of nukes that havnt been used?? the gritters might get used??

then we get to the real problem....how to melt the snow?
we build giant portable low loader type braziers on wheels and drag em around to thaw the roads.
we get the coal from untapped sources below our country, putting thousands of others back into work.
we use the coal to also make gas, and we invent a flame thrower type contraption to melt the snow.

at an extreme we could see the incoming snow storms over the altantic and north sea and set off a small nuclear explosion to disperse it before it arrived.

me and my neighbours mucked in during the partial thaw and as well as clearing our own properties, we cleared the pavements.
alas..with them being wet, they re froze overnight.
now if we would have had access to a couple of barrow loads of salt............??

Noticed on my way out of work around lunch that there were 4 council workers in high-vis clearing the pavements and spreading salt around the town hall in Wigan...nice to see that they are priotising correctly...wouldn't want the civil servants slipping and getting a bruise on their bums...they might not be able to sit on them for the rest of the day

But we have stopped making nuclear devices to build ploughs instead...

A BBC News Special on the snow on BBC One now. There wasn't one yesterday, oh wait London hadn't been hit yesterday! No wonder the Scottish are calling for an indepedence referendum.

The reason why the gritting situation is so bad (and to be fair it's not only Wigan council at fault here), is that on account of the credit crunch and the subsequent budget freezes/cuts, there are certain things that are easier to cut than others.

Grit is one of the easier ones.

Sadly the gamble has not paid off.

I know the football was due on but they had a news special on BBC One this morning as well, which shockingly replaced Cash in the Attic!

It would of saved more red faces had Wigan Council not stated on their website in November about how well prepared they were for winter and how they had more than enough grit and would not be holding back when it came to using it.

Why did this never happen when i was at school!

Probably because when you were at school there wasn't the culture of parents suing the school if there was any accidents involving their kids.

Grrr I never got 3 days off like that and I remember similar snow which gave me just 1 day off. And we had to be taught from them old war prison camp looking huts complete with boarded up windows!
