Lost every little bit of respect (and there was a lot) that I had for him after the 2015 Grand Final.

| I have been watching Wigan for the best part of 25 years, entertainment wise I would say Inga and Jason Robinson are 2 that come to mind from the early days, Tomkins in his first spell was great but I think Amos Roberts at the start of 2010 was the most entertaining and probably the best I have seen someone play in a Wigan jersey.

| Quote ="Wigg'n"Agree with all of those Itchy, good post.
Aside from the ones mentioned:
Steve Renouf, had everything you could want from a centre, a real shame the club didn't want to keep him for longer
Brian Carney in 03-05, did it against the Aussies too
George Carmont, probably our best centre in SL era due to longevity but lethal partnership with Richards and always gave 100%
Blake Green, inconsistent at times but incredible in 2003 GF and could dummy and go through a line as good as anyone. He went back to the NRL and was still great
Gelling (for the right and wrong reasons)
Most recently Manfredi and Marshall who can make something out of nothing. Marshy's try vs. Hudds is one of the best I've seen for a few years from a Wigan player.
Opposition players:
Lesley Vainikolo
Stacey Jones
Jamie Lyon
Paul Newlove'"
Carmont is a an excellent catch. I don't think that I can recall him ever having a poor game. Great clubman.
Marshall's try at Huddersfield was probably the best Wigan try in the last 15 years or so. The lad has obviously put a lot of effort in to improve his game and its great to see the results.
Lyon is probably my favourite Saints player if that is possible Top class centre with probably only Miles & Meninga that I would put in the same bracket with for me Miles the "classic" centre.
I used to work with Newlove's girlfriend years ago and she used to call him a bit of a mard arris so I could never quite take him seriously
One player who I did admire was Parry Gordon over at the Wire. Tough as teak for a half back and arguably the best ever half back not to get a cap.

| Can't look post Tomkins for me. Imagining what he could've done in our early 90s team is frightening. Magic player.
Most of the ones which come to mine have been mentioned, but I've always liked players with top passing technique as much as players who can run past defences. Couple of recent-ish examples who maybe wouldn't be obvious were Finch and Piggy Riddell.

He gave a speech at their awards night and basically slagged wigan off from start to finish totally unprovoked and unnecessary.

| So difficult to single any out as we have been absolutely spoiled and I agree with all the players mentioned.
That spell from Amos Roberts though was absolutely unbelievable.
For about 10 games he was unplayable, I’ve never seen anything like it on a rugby field in the pro game.
Literally every time he got the ball something happened and most of the time there looked to be nothing on.
Such a shame the way it ended.

Yes there was a video of it.
Basically, he was asked how it felt to beat Wigan in the Grand Final and rather than discuss the game he decided to comment on Wigan as a club in a rather derogatory way.

| Meninga in that Lancashire cup final wow. Offiah was better for Widnes in my opinion he was just that bit faster and lethal. Hanley, robinson, Bell, Gregory, those moments when Simon Houghton & Lee Gilmour would come on as impact players - just like Sam Panapa---way too many to think of and think of the recent/not so recent Leeds/Bradford/Saints players -- What a sport when it is played right ---what a sport!

| If I can tack a question on to the end of this thread: on these 1991 games that have been highlighted on Wigan TV the last few days, who is the commentator?
The contrast with 'modern' commentating, both the BBC and Sky, in their different ways, is marked!

My owd fella left praise for very few but on the rugby front he would regale for hours on Jim Sullivan Alex Murphy Lewis Jones Ken Gee Johnny Raper and Brian McTigue but his tales on Mc Tigue were the one’s that had me wishing I had seen him play in his pomp.
A proper guy with fantastic handling skills and a punch that dropped many a shoitehouse. Props today doing 15 minute stints is a joke and probably one of the main reasons why my love of the game isn’t what it was.

IIRC Brian McTigue was an ex-boxer. He was that good that Joe Louis old coach wanted to sign him up to box. The Ozzies were frightened to death of him, even though he was a true gentleman - he was a real hard case.
McTigue died much too soon, he was only in his early 50's if I recall. I did message with his sister very briefly, on a messaging board some years ago.
My old dad regaled me of times before I saw Brian McTigue. I saw him play in the late 50's and early 60's, but I was too young really to appreciate him. My old dad said when some visiting players were doing the 'dirty stuff', the crowd at Central Park used to shout "get him Mac". And lo and behold, that particular forward was left lying, usually knocked out, on the floor when the scrum broke up . AFAIK, Brian McTigue never got sent off.
Alex Murphy in his autobiography wrote, he "thanked God.......that Mac was nearby" when Murphy was winding the Ozzie pack up, 'down under', on such as the Sydney Cricket ground.

Brian McTigue was man of the match in the best Wigan team performance I have ever seen when they won the Challenge Cup in 1959. I then saw all 3 of the Ashes series matches later that year and he was enormous in helping Gt Britain win the series 2-1, playing initially at prop and then 2 at second row(the position he also played in the CC final).
This was that last time an Ashes series was won in England by GB.

Haha that first post is hilarious. Laughing at Bowen for saying Wigan would win the next 3 grand finals (we won 2 out of the next 3) and Burgess for saying he'd come back and win the GF (he did).

| I also don't care what any Leeds fan says, that try they scored in the GF is one of the most blatant knock-ons, I still can't believe the VR gave it.
