The problem is finding a quality assistant. We couldn't get an Aussie because of work permit problems. We won't be able to get an SL team coach to come and be an assistant, effectively dropping down. And there's no one at the club to promote to that position. I'm happy to just run with whatever IL decides and get on with it.
What I have been told is Scully has been approached by Wigan's prospective coach rather than Scully approaching Wigan or IL approaching Scully. This in itself is good as the coach is picking who he works with rather than being told who he'll be working with. Scully is/was a leader and a bloody good one at that. He's ranked up there with Farrell and no one would complain if [ihe[/i came back. I know he's now got coaching experience but from what I've heard he was taking training sessions whilst he was a player at Wigan anyway. Who's to say Scully wasn't doing that?
I'm actually quite excited to see what a relatively young (experience wise) coaching partnership could achieve

Agree 100% with this and also the likely circumstances to which he is being appointed, only bit I find offensive is the bit in bold. Great player but no Faz...............

| Quote ="Father Ted"Surely if Matt King comes to Wigan he will get the 3 shirt with Josh as his wingman. George and Pat to continue at 4 and 5.
That would allow Joel to return to the second row and be our right sided 2nd rower. '"
I'd be very happy with that. All we need is Matt King to sign and George Carmont to stay for another year! Although I would consider swapping King and Charnley around. Still with Sam, King, Charnley, Carmont and Richards that would be a top backline with the resources available to us.
Quote Should Coley retire then our props would be Fielden, Lima, Prescott, Mossop plus Crosby Davies and Spencer. Maybe also O'Carroll.
The back row would consist of Joel, HH, Hock, Lockers, Faz, Tuson & Hughes.
That looks like a very good pack after allowing for Coley and Hoffman's departure.'"
I'd possibly like to recruit another prop, but we may have to spend our resources elsewhere. Halfback and hooker will depend on where Wane/Scully see Thomas Leuluai better off at. IMO it would be at hooker. Two scenarios:
First option
Brett Finch
Thomas Leuluai
Mike McIlorum
Joe Mellor
Second option
Brett Finch
Joe Mellor
Thomas Leuluai
Mike McIlorum
Unless of course we can recruit a halfback or a hooker.

Hooker and centre have and would still be my priorities for 2012.

| Scully's passing game was far superior to Farrell in my opinion. But that's where it stops.
When it came to kicking, defence, workrate, leadership, discipline - Farrell all the way.

| I think the Sculthorpe move is a good one. Ok he is not a current assistant coach but no one is until they start somewhere.
As for being Mr St. Helens, he is from Oldham, played for Warrington, has lived in Wigan for many years and was transferred to Saints for a record transfer fee.
Hold on that can't be right because Wigan signed all the top players so no one else could have them.

Option 2 for me. I like the contrast between Finch and Mellor at HB, together they provide everything you want out of any any good HB combination. Plus it allows Tommy to stay at 9, his best position.

| Let's not forget that Deacs will be on the coaching staff by 2012. I can't see him playing on beyond this year. Will he go straight into the senior set-up or will he go and work in the Academy for a while?

Of the two, I'd go for the first.
I think Tommy is much more effective playing at scrum half. He's a very good hooker but he's world class at first receiver in my opinion. He was man of the match by a country mile for the Exiles on Friday and also won the Harry Sunderland award from scrum half in last year's Grand Final.
That said, I still don't think McIlorum is ready to play as an 80 minute hooker, so I'd be looking to recruit an impact 9 to come from the bench and really inject some momentum into the game towards the end of each half.
I haven't seen much of Mellor in the under 21s but I'd be cautious about giving a player with as little first team experience as Joe a bench spot from the word go. Problem is, when do you give players the chance to get that experience?
On another note, is the Matt King rumour simply wishful thinking or is there a (supposedly) genuine source?

| Two signings would make a work of difference. I'd like to see Matty Bowen and Matt King out of all the recent names discussed.
They would add experience to a team that is losing experience this year (Deacon/Coley poss Carmont) and fill in adding more strike to our team.
For example:
Bowen
Charnley King Carmont Richards
Tomkins Finch
Fielden Tommy Prescott
Hock Hoffman/Tomkins
Lockers
--------------
McM Mossop Faz Lima
Plus many others to fill in.

Farrah would be an awesome signing-can't see it though sadly!
Personally I'd like to see Tommy at 9 with someone else on the interchange with him. I'm sorry to say I don't rate McM.
We have a couple of good 9's in the youth system waiting to step up, I'm looking forward to them making their mark on the first team. Personally I thought Sam Gee was a better 9 than McM.

These are all the hookers off contract in the NRL next year:
Paul Aiton, Clint Amos, Shaun Berrigan, Glen Buttriss, Isaac De Gois, Beau Falloon, Stuart Flanagan, Jake Friend, Aaron Heremaia, Masada Iosefa, Andrew McCullough, Casey McGuire, Anthony Mitchell, Aaron Payne, Mark Riddell, Terrence Seu Seu
Taken from: www.zerotackle.com.au/rugby-leag ... z1P6Yl38yf
Now I dont follow the NRL much but are any of these worth a shout? Obviously I know of Riddell and Berrigan but cant see any of those coming back to Super League now they have 'been there, done that'

I'd have Leuluai as the #9 with Logan Tomkins on the bench.

| Just seen Andy Tuilanga has been released by Sale, would be an interesting proposition to look at this year as centre cover. Don't think it will happen but could provide us good cover this year on a short term deal with a view to him replacing George.
Personally always felt his game was much more suited to league than union.
