Yep. I'd be very happy, seems likely aswell with the sort of things being said. When Bradford were asked about Chris Walker they firmly denied it, for this one they just say basically, no comment.

If we were to bring Deacon in a coaching capacity to help Tomkins, Mellor and Powell to develop, and be used as emergency backup then that would be great idea.
Deacon was probably the most underrated scrum half in the game, and had the best kicking game.'"
LMAO!
Deacon is rubbish and always has been rubbish!

| We all know that Deacon has never been an attacking player, but he can organise a team around the park and is up there with Sinfield and Richards as the best kickers in Super League. Personally i think Leuluai's best position is hooker. Tomkins and Deacon would be a good combination with Leuluai at 9.

| Quote ="Chris Saint"To be fair, kicking aside Deacon took a huge ride on the back of McDermott, Anderson, Vagana, Fielden, Peacock to name a few. Its noticable since the Bulls dipped in the pack so has his effectiveness.
We see it in many games when a pack dominates a half back looks good, he has time, space and generally players going forward,- stick a Long, Tomkins, Eastmond behind that pack Bradford would have been even more dominant.
I am not saying he is a poor player as he isn't by a long way but he is an organiser rather than a creator, my step brother played with him at Winstanley College, i was hoping to play against him but by that time 1995/6 he was signed up and wasn't allowed to play anymore.
The one thing about him is he is the best one of the lot to become a coach, he is never full of his own self importance, has great reading of a game & has an outstanding kicking game.
For Wigan if it comes off as a dual role its a good move as he is certainly a thoughtful player, his kicking the last 10 years has been second to none, brings with him a wealth of experience in the biggest games and he has a steadying approach that will work well with the youngsters exuberance.'"
That's a very well thought out post. (for a Saints fan )
Deacon was superb when he played for England / GB. Then he got that terrible injury from a "tackle" just when it looked as though his International career would blossom.

| I fully support the view that if it's not on a lot of money then it's a good signing for the club.
And seriously about Matt Orford, do the few people proposing him:
a) Realise he's on a fair wedge at Manly and would probably want a tidy stash to play over here to
b) Have you actually watched Manly this year in the NRL? Orford has been very poor and done very very little 'leading his team round the park', he's usually gone missing at the first sign of it getting tough this year. A lot of Manly fans want rid of him.

| If this comes off I'll feel the same as I did when I found out Nathan McAvoy had signed.
In terms of coach/player thing, the salary cap rules seem to suggest that if he played any part of a game his entire salary would be counted as if he were a player, and therefore for him to be considered for games we'd need to leave an appropriate amount of space on the cap.

| Why would Deacon not be on much money. I would imagine he is one of Bradford's highest earners and is not out of contract so why would he take a pay cut?

| Quote ="NickyKiss"We have 2 halfs that are still developing and who's kicking games aren't their strong suit at this moment in time. One of them in Leuluai also looks to be more then happy at hooker and his invention from that position along with a halfback pairing of a young exciting stand off and a steady eddy scrum half looks a terrific prospect(when we go that way).
Does anybody know what the salary cap situation would be if Deacon comes in as a player coach? what parts of his wage count to the cap? If he's down as a coach who's also registered on the playing staff could Wigan not say we're only paying him peanuts to play and the majority of his wage for coaching?'"
his wage wouldnt count towards cap as long as hes just coaching. The instant he plays a game then his full salary counts towards the cap.

That's not actually true:
a) If he's registered with the RFL as a player, and in the top 25 earners at the club, his salary cap value (and this does not have to be the actual amount he gets paid) will count regardless of if he plays or not.
b) If he's an employee (coaching or backroom etc) and not registered as a player until the club needs to play him, then the club will contact the RSCM who will determine his salary cap value using the remuneration entitlement of his basic contract as a starting point. How much the salary cap value will be will be decided by the RSCM, who will also decide if he's allowed to play (i.e. there is sufficient cap space available in whichever of Tier 1 or Tier 2 liability that the player will now be classified in).
Basically b) is voodoo and dark arts of the highest order so it could be anything But so is the whole salary cap system, as it matters not a jot how much you get paid, but only what your value is (and the two can be and usually are quite different either + or - )

| I was surprised to read about the rumoured signing on "Teletext" and although at first surprised, I am actually really warming to the idea of him coming to Wigan.
We now have back-up if either Sam T, Lulu, Piggy and Mike Mc get injured as it would enable us to have a bit of a re-shuffle with out too much disruption. Deacon would compliment Sam very well and leave him to be off the cuff whilst Deacon direct us round the park and creates pressure by his brilliant kicking game.
The more I think about it, the more I would be disapointed if this move for Deacon doesn't come off..

It's not worded very well, but earlier in the section it talks about how they determine the cap value, using basic wage, bonus etc and its this they use to put a figure on for the salary cap and will do so with a non-player. So pretty much all will count. In the previous rules before being rewritten to take account of the live cap, it was pretty clear - play a game and all your salary and other remuneration is counted against the cap. It's pretty much the same here they've just decided to split out the various forms of payment (salary, appearance money, bonus, image rights etc) in determining the salary cap "value" of a player.

| I agree with signing Deacon but the most important signing we need is a rough house prop, then a halfback and then Shaun Briscoe.
The halfback wll be near to the end of their career and would provide the Dunneman factor e.g. Long, Deacon.
So if it does come off I'm all for it, his best years are behind him and he is no Andrew Johns but he can direct a team around a pitch and will bring Tomkins and Leuluai's kicking and organising game on leaps and bounds, bring it on!

This deal might yet not go through, Manly have just announced their 25-man Squad for the new season, and Orford is in it!
www.mwse.com.au/default.aspx?s=a ... -announced
Surely Bradford would not release Deacon before they have a replacement lined up?

They've also put in the wording that it's not limited to the clauses they've listed, which gives them carte blanche to make it up as they go along And changed things to make it estimation based rather than actual payment based.

I doubt we would, and I wouldn't be unhappy for him to stay, although he can't have another season like last. I hope we can get Orford, but if not, I don't think we'll do anything too stupid.

| I think this ould be a good signing. As already posted we will have 5 players playing for 4 slots. At some time during the season the cahnces are that 1 of the choice 4 (mm/tommy/tompkins/piggy) will miss a game whether through injury suspension drop of form so if we have someone like deacon to step in then I see it as a good thing. If at the same time he is taken on as a coaching role then this can only help the future prospects of Wigan.

| perfect signing based on our problems this year - kicking and direction is whats needed. most teams would love to have 2 half backs who challenge the line like lulu and tomkins - deacon represents the skills that are missing

| Have any of you who are claiming that Deacon is adept at "leading a team around the pitch" actually watched Bradford play since James Lowes retired? After a rudderless period in 2004 Iestyn Harris took on the mantle when he signed, but last season Deacon's "expertise" in this facet of the game was exposed again.
Hope this deal goes through, but it sounds too good to be true from a Bradford perspective.
