Has Carmont been announced as signing a new deal, because the rumours from where I live are that Saints have offered more than Wigan and he has asked for a week to think it over.

I'd be very surprised if Saints offered Carmont a deal. They already have seven players over the age of 30 in their probable starting 17 next year.

From what I have heard Wigan have offered Carmont a one year deal, but he wants two which Celtic may offer.

Good luck to George if he goes he has done a great job for Wigan in his time here.

I think that people may need to steel themselves for the possiblity of George leaving.

It's very much the NRL (and the Melbourne) way that 'name' players leave in order to make way for exciting understudies. This may be a future pattern at Wigan from now on. It worked for us in the old days, when the likes of Hanley's and Andy Greg's departures allowed us to re-seed the bed, despite the worry and uncertainty among fans at the time.

George has a been a great buy for us, and a very loyal and effective servant, but he's a veteran. At 32, I see no sense in Wigan offering him a two-year deal. I'd also be surprised if Saints have done that, unless the stories about them having severe financial problems are absolutely true.

Not unless they'd want to start playing Soliola in the 2nd row and i can't see why they'd want to do that with such a talented young player? He’s their centre for the next 5+ years imo and he’s going to be a big player for them.

So is Carmont going to replace Gidley? Or is Carmont going to be a back up for either centre? If so what will happen to Wheeler?

This rumour is a none starter for far to many reasons.

Celtic looks the favourite as it would be good for both the player and Celtic. He gets his security and a good wage and the club gets a model pro and a dam good player.

I just hope Goulding or Pryce can step up the mark.

Not that I believe the Saints rumour but a lot of people consider Soliola's best position to be the second row.

That could very well be true in the NRL as the centres there are expected to have a bit more ball handling ability than what he’s got but as far as SL centres go he’d be up there with the best of them.

There must have been better 2nd row options out there if they were looking for a 2nd row which is one of the reasons I think he was brought in as a centre as it’s a position they need.

The limited number of times I've seen the reserves I've been most impressed by either Marsh or Charnley, particularly with the one who has the mullet.

In the long run though I see Thornley to have the most potential. Marsh IMO would be a great ouside back, he has been highly tipped since he was 12 years old and I was playing against him when he played for Pats.

Charnley is also a good player, I really hope we can hold on to them all and in a years time make sure they have all had a bit more of a taste of first team action.

If George is allowed to leave it will be the worse decision since Furner was shown the door, George is by far one of our top 3 of our players, give him 2 years and in his second don't play him when we are playing the lower end of the table, bring a youngster in instead

I agree, as soon as Carmont were to get any sort of injury no matter how small he should be withdrawn until 100% while a youngster gets a chance to play first team in his place.

I would expect George to go with Noble, if Celtic come up with the 2 year deal.

I think Noble has enough contacts in the game to give Celtic a competitive squad.

You may be right but that would be a bad idea not to offer him 2 years if he wants it.

It's a tricky one but given the state of the squad at the moment I would agree with this.

George Carmont is everything I expect of an overseas player and that is to be one of the best players in the team and one of the best, in your position, in super league and Carmont fits that.

Another reason I would sign him up is partly because he can be injury prone. If for some games he needs a rest (I believe many times this season he has had a pain killing injection before a match) then we can rest him and give Goulding or Pryce ago.

It's a sticky situation really for the management team. Should have been sorted sooner IMO.

Another reason to keep him is to keep his quality in that position with the option to rest him and give the younger ones a go.

Keeping a player because they are injury prone is just stupid.

The only way I would consider offering him two years, would be with the second year his salary being nearly entirely composed of appearance bonus.

I don't blame George at all though to look for two years on a good basic salary, he's a got a family to provide for.

It was worded poorly (long day) but I think people get the point. The odds are with Carmont you will get a chance to use Goulding or Pryce due to injuries.

I don't understand why we're some people are unsure on giving Carmont a two year deal due to him either being injury prone or centre being a competitive place but they are happy to see Bailey resigned? IMO it's the same situation just a difference position.

We have heavy competition in the second row and Bailey has had that injury. Same with Carmont.

The difference for me is George Carmont is one of the best players in the squad and one of the best centres in Super League.

Phil Bailey is neither one of the best players at the club or one of the best second rowers in Super League.

For me it has always been a no brainer. Give him a two year contract!

Yeah I'm sure that could be done. Say we will pay George Carmont on appearances. Something like 3K per appearance. He makes 18 appearances? and it costs us 54K on the cap.

For me we need to be keeping players of the standard George Carmont is at.

He would have been my priority over Phil Bailey.

Been thinking about this for a while. George has been a fantastic player for us, but player signings should be made on present form and potential, not loyalty. I'd love to see him still here in two years, if he can keep his current form, and maybe even improve if he can be injury free, so it's a hard one to call. I see no reason to let him go now just because we won't know how he'll go in two year's time, or whether we'll have a replacement lined up ready to go. Knowing how Darrell suffered, I think we'd be better off keeping George, and bringing the youngsters in slowly alongside him

I think if we let Carmont go this season we will lose some strike power out wide, where most of our tries seem to come from

Also remember that Carmont only started to play Rugby League proffesionally in his mid twenties so he possibly has a little more wear and tear left in him, if he can shrug of the injury he seemed to be playing with through the back end of last season it might be worth signing him on for another 2 years especially as he is a more experienced head in a young team

Pay him 21k for every 7 appearances, it then only costs us 42k on the cap even if he plays more than 18 say 21 games and we end up paying him 63k in actual salary (like we would have at 3k per game) but save 12k on the cap
