| Makes me laugh how some people have a big sulking hissy fit over the weather. "Why aren't the council making it go away?"
Just deal with it, see the funny side of it and it'll all be gone before you know it. All this talk of lawsuits if someone slips on a bit of ice is absolutely nonsensical.
Just think what people in the past have had to deal with or people in other parts of the world right now. I feel embarrassed for some people with the attitudes they show.

| Quote ="Bilko"Apparently Wigan Council has 10 gritter wagons that have to cover all of Wigan and Leigh.
It did come all of a sudden over night. I was up late and it was rain till about 3am then it turned to heavy snow.
You also have to take into account the staff. One worker for another council said he had done over 100 hours overtime during christmas period to try and keep things going. If they employed loads of men and we have a mild winter, some people (not naming any names) would moan we were wasting cash on them.
The reason things are worse these days is a, the buggers that are [urlhttp://www.hse.gov.uk/[/url and b, the amount of cars on the road compared to 20 years has increased dramatically whilst public transport standards have decreased. People also have to travel further to work with most of the local factories having closed.'"
have seen the unemployment figures?
its not beyond the bounds of the council to employ TEMPS over winter, like shops do for christmas., then if the snow comes we have the man power.
but what about the means?
like a later poster says (im not quoting so i dont post twice) they DO stockpile grit and salt.
so why dont they stockpile it year in year out and let the pile get bigger for occasions like these?
its called forward thinking......sumat most local authorities have never heard of.
i would be happy for the council to employ extra men, spend extra on stockpiles, if it meant i could get off my estate to go shopping and that my bin got emptied.

Back Lane wasn't too bad.
However it does seem that they're only gritting from Hullet Close upwards, must be going through Woodnook estate.
If it freezes the bottom is going to be frightening.
Apparently somebody has been skiing down it today

| In Sheffield they have CIty Centre Ambassadors, I'm not entirely certain what they do other than just wander around looking like they feel important. Today a few council peeps were out shovelling snow while said ambassadors did bugger all. I saw at least six of them just wandering about A few more shovels and grit and things would have been much easier.
It was like a ghost town though, spookily quiet in the centre as no one could get there!

. Of course we could prepare for these conditions every year, have dozens of unused gritters sitting around for 20 years until they might be needed, hire additional staff just in case and add £50 to your council tax to pay for it all?
quote
sitting around gritters cost nowt to run.
we could use the present workforce to stockpile even more grit/sand in summer instead of doing what seem to be unecessary tasks (like watering hanging baskets to keep em occupied)...again no extra cost.
and we have just paid the bin men 3 weeks wages for about 2 days work....so the extra temp staff (see previous post) would more than make up for it without having to add to the council tax bills.
and the wigan economy would benefit by people being able to shop in shops that the shop workers could get to.

Ridiculous.
For fooks sake lets just put it down to 'one of those things'.....then in fifteen years time when it happens again with such ferocity we can all shrug and say it's 'one of those things'.
Let's just say it's not common for the UK to have such extreme weather over the years. Pie Man you could have it worse, but for the grace of god you could have been a resident / visitor of coastal Sri Lanka / Thailand / Indonesia and sat having turkey butties on boxing day in 2004. Let's just be grateful for that fact.

Sorry, that was a sarcastic response to wigan pie man.
I wasn't suggesting that they should clear the entire borough.
I would be annoyed if they did.
Am I the only one that enjoys driving in the snow?

There is no way extra men and salt would be able to clear it, but it would have some impact. Would it be worth the money, would it mean less spent on Libraries etc etc?? What I will say tho is why don't the council put more salt buckets out in winter and keep them full, one per estate. I certainly would walk and help salt my estate if it meant I could drive off it. The roads around Eccleston (Lancashire BC) are just passable but nothing can get of my estate.
And as was posted earlier, we had no power this morning and has been on and off all afternoon. that will be the Electric mans fault

People would probably abuse it by vandalism. Unless they were kept locked and keys given to certain trustworthy residents.

Rumour has it that Richie Mather's car was found crashed into the local sub station in the early hours of the morning, causing said blackout.

| Hindley and Ince were a nightmare this afternoon, avoid at all costs.
And if you want a moan about gritters, be grateful that they visit - I live close to Kirkhall Lane, one of the busiest roads in Leigh yet it appears that they have used all of the grit by the time they reach Leyth!

| 1. Where are all the bleeding heart, yoghurt knitting liberals now, telling us that the world is warming up, it's all our fault, and to save it we must switch our TV's off standby and put up with crappy second rate lightbulbs that don't work properly?
2. Some of the explanations given re the snow have an element of truth about them. The biggest truth though is that Wigan Council are completely inept and inefficient and have been for 30 years. They used to say that the people of Wigan would vote for a monkey if it had a red rosette on it, on the evidence I have seen, I think that has already happened.

| Hows about getting a team of scroungers, jailbirds, community service to clear the roads? No need to feed them as thers plenty snow to keep them hydrated as they work tirelessly all day and night through all main and side roads in the borough. It would even give them a chance to wave to their kids Chardonnay, Bianca, Kyle, Abbi, Elly, Ellie, Emma, Kelly, Laura, Georgia, Bryony, Alex, Jack, Ben, Dom, Nicole, Louis, Aaron, Joe, Nathen, Conner, Kevin, chardony, paige, Billy-Bob-Jack, Storm, Brooklyn, Kenau and Darren as they clear the streets of Leigh and Hag Fold. Itll be great. INIT!!
