In those days settle didn’t mean find a nice house, go for a second viewing, put in an offer, have it accepted, put your kids in school and live out your days.

The Brigantes were a ruthless tribe from Yorkshire, who conquered /integrated all the other Celtic tribes in the North of England. They didn’t ‘settle’ in the modern sense of the word. They murdered all who stood in their way, occupying settlements like Wigan, and decimating any local population.

There lies my confusion. Why would a group of your fans name themselves after a tribe from Yorkshire, that killed all the most of local population, and ruled over those remaining with an iron fist? They weren’t from Wigan, they were based in Yorkshire, they just kicked your ars3.

I think Riversiders would have been better. The idea is a very good one, I just think the name choice is a bit lame.

Brigantes operated against the Romans in an area from what is now north of the River Mersey pinching at a point of what is now Wilderspool in Warrington and as far up as Cumrbria and over to Yorkshire.
So in essence Rugby league country.

You do realise that "Yorkshire" didn't exist until much later in history, don't you? I'm proud to be a Lancastrian, but even I wouldn't claim the County Palatine existed prior to the coming into existence of England....















The "Celts" weren't actually a race by the way; there's very little evidence in the genetic history of Britain of invasion and settlement in large numbers prior to Anglo-Saxon times. When people speak of Celts they are actually referring to a culture, which certainly was successful and at its height was shared by people in large parts of Western Europe. For example, the majority of the genetic make up of the Irish is derived from people that settled in Ireland thousands of years ago, long before the Celts appeared.
