| League Express names Shaun Wane as Wigan's new coach. I remember him as a strapping second row forward who was almost unstoppable when he was 15.
At the time, I was talking to Jackie Edwards, a good judge, who said that he was the hardest player he had ever seen at any level.
I was also told that Shaun ran his school team which to me seemed both unusual and remarkable.
I'm always impressed with his pre-match talks in the South Stand and the way the reserves played for him in the 'semi' was fantastic.
I'm sure he'll do a good job.

Shaun has been highly placed at Wigan for a while, and is highly rated. But I wouldn't bank anything on a League Express story.

| I don't really recall seeing much of Shaun Wane as a second rower, but in the mid to late 80s he was a pretty much unstoppable prop, hard as nails. I always remember him flattening a couple of Manly players during that fight where Brian Case got sin binned.
Wane and Case were probably my favourite prop combination, possibly even better than Platt and Skerrett.

That bit is true. Was in the same year as Waney and briefly played in the same team, and he was the toughest lad I've known. His position at school, and his early days at Pat's was loose forward if I'm not mistaken. He always seemed to have a maturity beyond his years too. Would love to see him as coach for the simple reason that he wouldn't accept under par performances or players not giving 100% on the field.

I also remember him kicking goals. Seems like yesterday.

| Would be a very bold appointment but one I would welcome he certainly has earned it.
One thing that i like about him as other have said he is a strong character, too many coaches have come to Wigan with a weak character despite big reputations and folded like a pack of cards.
Wane knows what it means to be at Wigan and seems to have the players respect, it would be for me very much a Mike Gregory type appointment, bit of a gamble but the pro's out weight the cons although have to say i would still like an NRL experienced coach to come in if we have been turned down by any that are good and available then he could be a strong option.

| I think it would be a great appointment if that is what we go and do.
You only have to look at how the reserves play for him, he has total respect from each and every single one of them and they listen to everything he says.

| There would be a little sense of risk there by appointing Wane due to a lack of first team experience but i think the vast majority would back it.
He knows the club inside out and knows what it means to play for this club and to win for this club. He obviously knows the young players at this club like the back of his hand and he'd be as good a coach as any to bring them on.
I'd be happy enough.

I'd still prefer McGuire simply because of his reputation as an intellect of the game, and the standard of coaches he's trained under. To have Wane in as some kind of senior assistant (maybe with a view to taking over in the future) would be ideal because, as other's have said, he's Wigan through and through and knows all about the ethos that's been missing from this club in recent years.

If you mean go with him to Celtic, then no, but leave Wigan, probably yes.

| Monie was pretty scathing of Wane as a player in his biography. It'd be interesting to see if he learned from what Monie told him and could apply it to current players as a coach.
Would an appointment like Wane - unproven, and never a top class player provide the necessary strength of leadership at a big club like Wigan? It's a big risk IMO. Would he get the players respect? Especially from those who've already attained more in their careers than Wane managed?
At Bradford we always promoted from within but it can backfire as you will have seen.

I don't know what the situ was with McNamara at Bradford, but if Wane is appointed it would be as more than just a former first team favourite. Shaun has worked very hard for many years in the coaching set-up at Wigan, and his work is hugely respected. Plus, I doubt there are many at Wigan now who have attained more than Shaun did as a player - to start with, he was in the Wigan team that won the first WCC Challenge against Manly. I'm pretty sure he lifted a lot of other silverware in that time as well. How could he have failed to?
All that said, I'd prefer McGuire because of his NRL experience. But I'd definitely want Shaun Wane in there somewhere - his teams' results pretty well speak for themselves.

| I'm happy to give Wane at shot at it and if it doesn't work out we can look for an early appointment ahead of 2011.
I just wish the club would clarify the situation though.

I am happy for them to do it as soon as we get knocked out or after the grand final if we manage to get there!
If it is not announced at that point in time I will begin to assume nothing has been done!

| ive been told recently that betts has been contacted again about coming back to wigan. i am really fearing that they are just scraping about looking for anyone.
having said this id be pretty happy with wane, think keeping things wigan based would probably be beneficial right now.

| I like the idea of Wane being involved in first team coaching but I am unsure about him being head coach.
It is a big jump to make, from reserve grade straight into the top job. Even more so when you think that it is the Wigan role. I would hate it to be an example of too much to young (metaphorically speaking)

Quite harsh I think, Betts never had the chance to prove himself and again he was someone who did have respect off the players.
