| Happy that it’s all sorted and we can move forward. It’s a wise move to announce the full staff in one go, rather in in dribs and drabs, as it feels like a new start with the outsiders coming in from Wire.
The usual pre season optimism may already be building inside me but I think Peet will go well.

| What's everyone's opinion on the Wigan head coach needing a mentor, rather than being ready when appointed like at Saints or Wire?

It's more like a management [iteam[/i than Wane being Peet's "mentor" isn't it? I don't see it much different than when Madge was here & unlike Lam they won't need 6 months' adjustment (if he ever really did get it) nor underestimate SL in general (I really do think he came over with the attitude that SL was a vastly inferior game & he'd just be able to sit back & relax for a while).
At least I can stop fretting whether to renew my ST now, I'd be burning shirts if McDermott had been hired as was the speculation in some quarters.

| Unfortunately the appointment is in keeping with the squad for next season - underwhelming.
I'll be pleasantly surprised if we finish above any of the following next season:
Saints
Wire
Catalan
Leeds
As a club, when we've needed to push on and improve, we've gone and looked outside the Wigan bubble, which generally meant looking to Australia (Monie, Maguire etc) for new ideas. Unfortunately, we seem set on a course of nostalgia and reminiscing that is going to hold us back.

Agreed, he'll either help Smith take his game to the next level or make it clear that Smith isn't the future in the halves and assist in finding someone who is.

But he didn't do this at Wire, so I'm not as optimistic.

| Just watched Peets interview on Wigan TV and I certainly like what he has to say. It certainly wasn’t full of the bluster we heard from Lam and claims of rugby league being played like the planet had never seen. It sounds very much like there’s an appetite to get us playing good rugby but the main appetite is to improve everyone and to work towards winning trophies.

| I’m normally very optimistic when it comes to Wigan but I think this coupled with the signings for next year really doesn’t fill me with optimism. That said I will be fully behind them and hope Peet can do the business.

Agreed. He very much seems out of the Wane mould, which is to be expected. A lot of emphasis about caring for players properly and communicating with them; maybe somewhere he thinks we can improve (who knows!)? Excited about the appointments, it does seem like a fresh start even though the personnel isn’t fully turned over.

Shaun Wane - born winner who makes everyone below him better. The current England coach.
Matty Peet - Coached us when we had the strongest defence in the league and even when we've been we've had a solid defence. Coached the academy.
SOL - One of the best players of his generation and getting good praise as a coach. No issues if he takes over the defence as he wasn't exactly a bad defender. Great leader.
Briers - Cracking player, received good reviews as a coach in some circles, replaces the poor attack coach we all asked to replace.
What is underwhelming about it?

Put simply, the head coach isn't a big name.

I read an interview that referred to Wane mentoring Peer. It significantly mentioned it

Was that not referring to when Wane was head coach and Peet was assistant?

| Having a coach who has got the gig purely off coaching merit rather than what he did as a player is appealing to me. I'm optimistic.

As I said in the post you replied to - we've gone back to the Wigan bubble, we've even brought back Wane into some part-time role that I'm not exactly sure what he'll do. Some of the things you say about O'Loughlin and Briers applied to Lam. We need some new thinking and a fresh approach - have no problem with Peet, O'Loughlin or Briers as assistant coaches but not as the main man.
