| In pre-season, I watched Ian Lenegan's presentation at the fans' forum, during which he stated that our turnover was down and quite a bit of this could be accounted for due to a drop in our average home attendance. He went on to say he wasn't worried by this because the new structure will mean more competitive games and, in turn, an increased attendance at home games.
Since then, we have played two SL games at the DW. The Hudds game drew a crowd of 12,488 - our lowest against them since 2009. Last night's 11,718 was our lowest home attendance against Hull FC since 2003. This obviously isn't a great start to growing our home averages, which have steadily been on the decline since 2012 and Lenegan's statement at the fans' forum seems naive to say the least. To emphasise just how the crowds have been falling, in 2011 we had only one SL game with less than 13,000 in attendance whereas in 2014 we had 8 (including 5 under 12,000 and 1 under 11,000). In that time the average dropped from just over 16k to just over 14k.
Is there anything the club can do to get the 2000 or so regular fans who seem to have turned their back on attending week-in, week-out? There are numerous reasons why the attendances are tumbling (e.g. Thursday games, lack of a "superstar" such as Sam, no free parking on site anymore, overall standard of SL, ticket prices etc) and whilst I agree with the sentiment behind Lenegan's presentation (the new structure is better than the previous one), have they really done enough to get more bums on seats? I've seen a lot of people complaining about the atmosphere but it's no surprise it's so poor with such a low crowd.

| Don't forget to add into the mix that over the last 8 years or so, income has fallen or flat-lined in the NW, and that by most measures we're still (along with the NE & Wales) among the poorest regions in the country. There are obviously blips (apparently Bury's average income has actually increased more rapidly recently than neighbouring areas), but job insecurity and lack of disposable income has to play a part.
I don't think the drip-drip decline of the last few years will be reversed dramatically within the next 5 years.
Those who made food & rent a priority won't be back any time soon and the new format will have to spectacularly work before the cynics will put down the Sky remote & trot up to the gate.

| I don't like saying it but I wouldn't underestimate the impact the Ben Flower incident may have had on crowds.
Plus the fact that both home games this year in SL have come off the back of two desperately disappointing performances.

| Personally, I've not been to a home game since 2012 due to my inability to get home via train after the game. Managed to get to the odd away game and to Magic weekend/finals, but that's it. One of the reasons I'm looking at graduate jobs in Manchester is that i'll be able to attend home matches again.

You're thinking of Northern Europe. The UK doesn't have any of the 20 poorest regions in Europe. They are all in Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Poland.

| Not being funny, but, as an outsider, Wigan doesn't *look* to me like a particularly poor area. And my son, who lives in London, made the same comment. Certainly it appears a bit more prosperous than where I live (Dumpsville, Wiltshire).
I daresay "off the back of two desperately disappointing performances" is a factor, though.
Anyway, I'll be back up for the Saints game, if not before, so that will boost the attendance by another one.

| As an away fan I stopped coming to Wigan for a few reasons:
- rising costs at home v wages
- the rise in petrol costs (though that's been partly reversed recently)
- the car parking, both cost and time getting away at the end
But the biggest reason is the travel time. What did for me was I once set off for the game from York at half 4 and missed the kick off. Over 3 and a half hours stuck in queues. Which I might have just out down to bad luck had there been an accident or breakdown that caused the queues but there wasn't. It was simply congestion. Now not all of the queues were in Wigan or on the M62 but a decent proportion of my time queuing was in those areas.
I'm obviously not blaming the Wigan club for this at all, but it's the biggest single reason why I stopped and I'm sure it would at least factor into other people's decisions too. I can't justify having time off work just to get to a regular league game. Not to mention the frustration factor.

| for me, it is down to the fact that the quality of SL has dramatically fallen away over the last 10years which is now compounded by the fact that we cannot compete with the RFU and NRL and as a result all our stars have left the game and we cannot attract stars to replace them. I hate to say it, but even latics get bigger 'home' crowds now and the apathy in the ground during our games is palpable. I was slammed on this forum for criticising the new structure and lack of investment in marquee signings to excite the crowd and put bums on seats but the proof is on show for all to see now.
#newera is just a marketing ploy to detract from the falling standard of the comp - RL is now just a feeder comp for the RFU & NRL, plain and simple.

| Do Latics really get bigger home crowds than us?
If so, that says to me it's nothing to do with the standards of the game or seeing star players because there certainly aren't any in the Latics team. The club are clearly not doing enough if that is the case.

| We are playing poorly and presently don't look like there is any improvement on the horizon hence the poor crowds. It ain't rocket science.
One consolation is that it may get IL to go out and seek new potential outside of the club structure

That's not the trend at all though.
2012 - lost 4 home games and averaged 16k
2013 - lost 4 home games and averaged 14.6k
2014 - lost 2 home games and averaged 14k

| But we had won or were winning trophies during those years. Presently we look bottom 4 and play like a bottom 4 team hence the attendances. Will still get 20k plus versus Saints

| Overall the quality of SL this year is dire - you look around DW and there are very few young fans anymore, those that are there are not really interested in the game. The reason for this is down to excitement and I'm afraid that is in very short supply these days despite the fact that every minute matters

| One of the biggest factors affecting SL for me is the way that the referees are allowing the PLB to slow right down. This is killing the excitement of the game. It is creating a boring game. You could have the superstars in the world playing but it would still be dull with such a slow PLB.

| Absolutely. And coming at a time when refereeing guidelines in the NRL look to have made a big improvement this season (but let's see if it lasts!), Superleague is starting to look clumsy and laboured.

| Latics are averaging 12,600, we'll beat that this season.
I think the lack of a superstar player(s) can't be underestimated. Who in this team puts bums on seats? There isn't anyone. We've gone from playing the most exciting rugby in the league (2012) to probably the least watchable.
And the constant turnover of players is so frustrating.

Spot on IMO.
If your best players keep leaving so will some fans. We've consistently seen our better players leave year on year and that's deflating. It's good that the comp is now more competitive and that may eventually lead to more income and therefore is being able to hold our best players but until it does it'll be seen as a second rate comp.
Ask me to name the 20 most exciting players to watch in World rugby league and I'd name possibly none from superleague.

| On the other hand, other clubs crowds are up. Wigan are not a barometer of the new structure. The entire league will be that barometer over a full season, not just a few games.
Wigan's falling crowds are an issue for Wigan. Maybe it's down to the style of play, maybe it the Brigantines banning has had an effect on that section of fans, maybe it's a lack of Tomkins. Maybe it's a lack of marketing. But I would also say it's early days.

Saints are down on last season, Wire are down, Leeds are down.
