Just hits home the gutting of the squad in little over 2 years.

| How would that compare to the list of players 'in' since the 2010 Grand Final?
P.s. You missed Feka.

| Oh of course, how could I forget the big man!!!
Thinking about players in since then would include our homegrown lot, which although admirable, won't fill the gaps or experience as we all know! Anyway a quick think would bring up something like:
Lauaki, Smith, Green, Taylor, Flower, Dudson.
Wish I'd not bothered looking now but shows how we are 'balancin the books'. Wish I hadn't bothered looking, depressing reading!

I take your point but I actually meant in the time since that season to show what's gone on with player recruitment/retention.

You are ignoring player development though. RL clubs generally improve by developing the players they have rather than always signing better players than they lose. What I find more concerning is that very few players seem to have improved in the last two years. There's only really Charnley, Goulding, Mossop and Hughes who have really kicked on since 2010 IMO

Mossop took a massive backwards step last year, particularly towards the end of the season when compared to his 2011 form. Goulding developed well though and looked impressive at centre, especially in attack. Wigan don't have anything to worry about really, although I don't think anybody is disputing you are weaker from the loss of players there is still enough talent to ensure a top 3 finish.

Add Farrell and McIlorum to that list, it's not really that bad is it?

Harrison Hansen has improved massively since 2010.
In fact I think last season was his best in his forty years at the club.

You think so? McIlorum was pretty good in 2010, I'd say he's about the same now after a below par 2011, definitely don't think he's as good as Wane hypes him up to be. 2 red cards can't be ignored either. I'm a big fan of Farrell but I wouldn't say he's any better than he was in 2010, again after a below par 2011

| You could argue though that Charnley replaced Roberts and Goulding replaced Gleeson which didn't do too badly as a pairing last seadon.

No way, really? Hansen was transformed in 2010, still making a ton of tackles but also running really dangerous lines in attack, I was really disappointed when he went back to only taking drives in attack

| There's no doubt our transfers in to the club haven't been as high profile in the past couple of years as they were previously but in fairness that could be said of all teams as the money just isn't in the English game anymore to compete for the top end players.
We need to keep pumping money in to that youth set up and keep bringing the youngsters through because that's the only way teams over here will be able to stay on top.
We also can't forget we have the cloud of the biggest player of them all leaving us within the next 2 years in Sam Tomkins. We simply must have plans to replace him in place way in advance and because he's so special that's probably going to mean bringing in 2 or 3 players across the board to balance out the loss.

I'd love to see us replace Sam with a big name forward. Murphy is exciting from FB and a few years under Rads and Hampo will helphim no end. We don't have a bully in the pack though who strikes fear into opposing teams. Sign one of those and the likes of Smith, Green, Powell and Murphy can run riot. It's pointless trying to replace Sam like for like.

| It's good that guys like Sam, Charnley, Mossop etc have all progressed
BUT
What we've lost wasn't a gulf in talent but a gulf in leadership qualities.
We've decimated the original leadership team and the qualities some of those guys possessed isn't easily replaced.

| It's sad but I suspect that Wigan's 2010 SL side will be the last really top class British team. The loss of quality overseas players and defections to RU, the continued downward pressure on wages in real terms due to the SC and the failure of the financial failings of the game means that mediocrity will increasingly become the norm as the game slides towards the dismal semi-pro future that inevitably awaits it.

By the same token, I think we've got new leaders coming through. Lockers aside obviously, we still have Pat who is becoming more of an experienced head with each year; Sam, despite us seemingly being resigned to him leaving soon, isn't shy of letting his feelings known on the pitch; plus there's Hansen, Mossop, Smith possibly being leaders of the future.
