| At the amount of abuse Super Sam isn't getting, his mistakes cost us the game yesterday yet nobody slagging him off or calling him for it, if the loss of the game had been down to Gelling or A N Other then there would be a 37 page slagging off fest, unbelievable this site at times, it seems thge man can do no wrong

| I'm not one of those fans who berate players after a performance and you're right some on here do. But come on you must admit after everything Sam as done for us, they way he has entertained, beat teams, some of his runs, some of the knocks he's taken it'd be a bit rought to lay into him? To be fair to Sam it was him who got us back into the game when we were 16 down, the game could have quite easily ran away from us and we could have faced a huge hammering. Sam had a bad game by his standards, why do we need to rake over it?

Letting the ball go into touch was inexcusable and embarrassing to say the least

| Sam has earned the right to have an off day in all truth and that is why he'll stay clear of much criticism.
He'll also pay people back for that and do his very best to lead us to the grand final.

| He will do more good than bad, of that there is no doubt. I remember one occasion he was letting a ball go over the dead ball line, but it bounced short and the oppo (Hull?) scored a try. In the CC Final last year he allowed a 40-20, and of course yesterday he did the same. He is good enough to learn from that, and will make up for it. But the OP is right. Had it been Gelling there would be uproar.

| Tomkins was a shambles yesterday acting like a footballer running off to moan at the ref because the forward pass wasn't given!! Play to the whistle!! Looked completely uninterested in getting back to field the ball was walking to them all and telling Josh to run it back when his calf was heavily taped!! He is useless under the spiral bomb and is lucky he plays in a league where very few can put them up regularly!! Didn't look like the Sam Tomkins I've enjoyed watching for the past 3 seasons on yesterdays performance. Also thought Harrison Hansen looked completely unfit yesterday and was a passenger was of the time he was on the pitch. O'Loughlin was running the ball like he was still in the LF position. Probably the worst performance I've seen from Wigan for a good while and Leeds, Sinfield in particular made us pay for it.

| Just as i suspected, excuses being made, if this had been Dennis Moran back in the day the board would have gone into meltdown, it's just like Trent Barrett all over again, the guy can do no wrong, unbelievable, surely if a player is constantly praised for the good things he does then surely he should be subject to just as much criticism when he does wrong

Why would we abuse our star player ? Leave that to opposition fans.
However he does need to work harder with Rads and Hampo on the training field to improve the defensive side of the full back role - taking high kicks, tackling one on one etc. Also needs to stay more focused on his game, some of the Twitter nonsense he involved himself with the night before a big match was unbecoming of such a player.

| If a player performs brilliantly throughout the season they are going to get less criticism when things go wrong. If a player makes plenty of errors throughout the season then people are going to keep bringing it up throughout the year. It's not rocket science.
Tomkins was pretty awful yesterday and made some poor errors but he's been one of the best players in Super League throughout the year, so when he makes errors people aren't likely to call for him to be dropped, or suggest he's the worst fullback since the dawn of time.
When a player who gets a lot of criticism plays like Tomkins does I think they'll receive quite a bit of leniency when things go wrong too. It's quite simple really, do well consistently and you'll get less criticism when things do go wrong. Make mistakes consistently and you'll get a lot more criticism when things go wrong.
I agree with the above comment though, he really needs to do some work on the weaker areas of his game and stay focused.

| at the game yesterday , and some sat round me said he had made a few mistakes
1 the kick
2 the 40-20
now , i havent seen the game on tv yet , i forgot to record it , but on first reaction the kick was a cracker , allways going away from him, brilliant technique. for me most fullbacks would have struggled to deal with it . so give the kick the credit it was due
the 40-20 , nobody sat around me spotted it was a 40-20 , i didnt really hear anything from the fans on the sideline , so i thought it was the safest option for him to let it go , again credit the leeds and the kick

| The high kick he dropped was a great kick from Sinfield. If i was Shaun Wane i would be questioning why Sinfield was allowed to put such a great kick in. Why was there no pressure on him. Even players like Radlinski and Wellens who are both great takers of the high ball would of struggled with that one.
40-20 was just an error that sometimes happens. He misjudged were Sinfield had kicked it from.

| Sam is always going to have bad games just a shame for him it was in a semi final. Despite the mistakes he made yesterday he was still one of our best players, but that probably says more about how badly everyone played.
I'm certainly not going abuse him, yesterday when we were 16-0 down, Tomkins took the ball and ran 60 metres. After that we scored two tries and were back in the game.

| Quite a stupid thread really. His contribution over a season far outweighs his admitted errors in one particular match. That is why he does not get abuse.
In my eyes Wigan a very good allround team, but if you took Tomkins out of it, it would leave a gaping chasm that would be almost impossible to fill. Even yesterday all of the good moves that involve the backline , Tomkins was instrumental in all of them. In addition he gives you an attacking threat from deep inside your own half which practically no other super league team has, apart from maybe burrow when he is in the form he was showing yesterday

| Its not a stupid thread. The OP is pointing out that if certain players had done the three errors which led to tries so early on then this place would have been on melt down even before the game finished yesterday. Most are having a go at the ref but Sam cost us just as much. Yes he is still the best player in SL and more than likely in the top 3 players in the world at this moment in time. But yesterday just as against Wire at home he has made poor decisions that has cost us in the end.
All players make mistakes he makes less than most and will make up for it but to say a thread is stupid as you do shows that some will get away with huge errors. But some will never get away with one.

| I don't really know what you want us to do Baked Bean Boogie, knitting round the guillotine is very much out of fashion although I do agree that other players would have got a lot of stick for what Sam did yesterday but you have to compare like with like for one thing and you are surely not comparing Denis Moran and Sam as being of equal ability. Sam had probably the worst game I have seen him have but the guy is human and he was not on his own and anyone who has never made a mistake does not exist and he most certainly did not lose the match for us single handedly. He'll learn from it and be better for it in the end and as others have said he has done far more good for us than bad so whilst I am disappointed we lost the game let's move on and leave it as tomorrow's chip paper

| Sam made mistakes which cost us tries and he wasn't the only one. So did Charnley. We are not having a go because both have been exceptional this year and one poor game doesn't mean we slag them off.
Sam is the best player in SL by a very long way and Josh the leading try scorer by some distance.
One poor game does not a bad player make!

There were plenty of others besides Sam. The mistakes from Lockers, Charnley, Gelling, Hughes, Finch, McIlorum and others were equally responsible.

| Breaking the game down into 1/4's we only really lost the 1st of those quarters by any margin. Its an over simplification to blame Sam for the loss of the game, but his errors sure as hell did not help. We shaded the next 1/4 despite lots of pressure and the 2nd half was rather close overall points wise. Many have said that the Leeds won it in the pack, well lets look at the players who came back from time away, three are normally influential pack members, and ofc SOL was missing from the pack. The pack built no base yesterday, and if even Bailey, the most fay forward in rugby league, starts to look good, you know you have problems! Charnley did not look 100% either, but then who is at this stage of the season.
Its chip paper now, and we need to be on the "London " thread and looking forward.
Any gloating trolls, please note i did not mention the ref...

| Sam didn't have as bad a game as that buffoon in the middle. Can't believe at some of the posts on here about Sam. you should be looking at the team that was picked. You have a few injuries in very important places and yesterday you looked a very unbalanced team with Sean at standoff. Love Sean to bits and would be in any star team of mine but he isn't a stand off. You will have Matty for the rest of your games and I think you will win the GF this year.

Won't get pelters from me though after getting us out of so many holes over the years.
