| Good step and difficult to get ahold of, but pretty lightweight, needs to bulk up imo to deal with bigger centres and avoid being bundled into touch like he was against Nero.

| Wheeler is a cracking player when fit and is a better stand off, which is his natural position, than Lomax or Gaskell for me. The trouble though is his injury record and I would give it 5 games before he is injured again

Wheeler is pretty big mate, he's really well made and stocky. Some idiot saints fans have even commented on him looking overweight.
He's got great footwork, much like Martin gleeson in his prime and also pretty safe in defence but IMO he lacks that killer speed off the mark which would complement his foot work.
Just great to see him string three games together which must be a first for him.

I'm still not convinced he's big enough really to deal with other bigger centre's in defence certainly, but that remains to be seen. He has outstanding footwork and I agree lacks the pace to go all the way, but get a quality winger on his outside and he could create countless tries by creating space for them with his feetwork.

| I was really impressed with the glimpses of attacking play Wheeler showed last night if he continuous in this vein of form he should be looking at a place in the England side.

| Think it was wheeler mate.
Very impressed by his footwork and although he was dumped into touch by Nero (cracking effort IMO), i think that was down to a lack of balance as opposed to a lack of strength.
He was showing a very powerful hand-off at certain points.
Like to see him get a good run

That was wheeler mate.
Wigan have tried to sign him once and also linked to him recently.

| I thought Wheeler looked as if he would be more suited to playing Left Centre. He's got a good step but kept stepping to much inside for me. Could he be a replacement for Carmont? I'd be happy with that!

| I think Wigan have been sniffing around him recently with his contract due to expire this year. I think he could be international if he gets a good run of games but is wasted at centre IMO. I'd like to see him at Full Back or Stand Off were he would have more input into a game but the Saints board would go into meltdown at the suggestion of not playing Gaskell.

Not true. Wheeler was making mincemeat of the Pies at the DW last Easter until he was taken out. I think he retured just before the GF. It is only his injury record that is the problem. Saints fans have been hoping to see Wheeler at six for years. It's just that he can't get a run together because of injuries.
However, his step makes him a useful centre also and I am hoping that once Shenton is back again, Meli will be dropped as he is all degrees of useless.

| To be fair there's a lot of Saints fans that would probably shoot you at the mere suggestion of dropping Gaskell. I don't agree with the Meli thing, yes he has his flaws in defence but last year him and Foster were racking up the points. Gaskell must make way for Wheeler if he stays fit. We can't waste his talent at centre.

That seems a bit of a waste. Gaskell is better than Wellens.

| Saints should bite the bullet and use Wellens as a utility player on his return coving fullback, centre and back row as and when players are injured or need a rest. He's been a sensational player and servant to them but they can't afford to let sentiment get in the way of progressing.
Either that or use him as a traffic cone in the car park!

| I'd like to see Wellens used as the back off the bench that Simmons likes to use. He is far past his best now and the only reason he will play this year is through sentiment. I'd prefer Makinson or Lomax at Full Back.

| Personally I don't see it as wasted talent at centre. You have to play as many of your best players as possible. Wheeler at centre is only a waste if you think the centre spot does not have any prestige. I think that's a bit short sighted given the quality we have had at centre.
Last year we lacked enough creativity on attacking the line. With Wheeler on one centre Shenton in the other, it gives us good creative players out wide and in the middle.
If we expect to do well just having 2 creative players in the middle and runners everywhere else then I think we will continue to fall at the last hurdle.

| I don't see the problem with Meli and Shenton at centre with Wheeler at stand off. Wheeler's waste of talent comes when he can show no more than Either of them at centre but could make a huge difference in the middle.

I was saying all last year that, talent wise, he's the best centre at Saints (and probably the best 6), just can't get him on the pitch.
No doubt Rogues will hark back to a meaningless reserve game to point out why him and Lomax are rubbish as they lost to Wigan.

I do. Your idea involves Meli. That is automatically a problem.
I dream of the day when I don't see Meli in our line up.
