Just watched Tim Smith have a decent game for Wakefield and deserved his MOM award. Wonder if you would have prefered him in a Wigan shirt again this season instead of Brett Finch....hmm, tell me what you think.

A bit of a joke really but both players were well below par in their first few months at the club. Jokes aside though will be interesting to see the impact Finch has without Hoffman.

Smith will do fine in an average team where his mistakes and missed tackles will be tolerated.

Give Smith enough ball and runners who run the proper angles and he will destroy any team. His passing game is better than any half back over here. What he can't / won't do is run the ball (like Finch) he is also a poor defender.

Remember that pass at Murrayfield to Joel Tomkins, as good as anything you will ever see.

I was a big fan of Tim Smith. A very naturally gifted player but unfortunately he only showed it in glimpses, and had already become the scapegoat of course. I remember him being booed and having the usual 'did his Mum pick it' comments when getting man of the match at home to Crusaders where he basically created most tries and threw some superb passes. I even remember him setting up on the left and then spotting a gap on the right and taking it upon himself to run the other way and put the winger in in the corner.

His defence was woeful however, but we seemed to have solved that when we signed Gleeson. If he can keep his head in the game then he'll be a top buy for Wakey.

Tim Smith can be a decent ball player but one of his faults is that he usually wants to get rid of it as soon as he has got it. Sometimes it can be a good ball but at other times it is not. The ball is like a hot potato to him, it has to go. A good stand off knows when to part with it and when to stick and take the line on. At Wigan Smith never took the line on, and when the opposition can see this they can just stand of the player and just pick off his runners. At least tonight he kept hold at least once when he scored his try.
i still thought his kicking game was poor and we all know his tackling leaves a lot to be desired.
He seems a nice bloke and I hope he does well at Wakey but I woulcn't have him back at Wigan at any price.

He's very skillful and his passing can be world class but it's very inconsistent, he throws a lot that have big red crosses on them or miles forward. He's also a decent organiser. His defence is woeful and his kicking is nothing special. He'll go well for Wakey but Finch is a different level imo.

So Craig you were one of the few people who thought he started well last season. I think you are in a minority there.

If the game was like American Football with different Attack and Defence teams, he'd be phenomenal.

As it is, defence completely undermines him.

Never said anything about the beginning of last season, he came back from a serious neck injury and looked well off the pace initially. When he settled in to the team properly he was one of our best performers last season. He can still throw odd bad passes but he is better than Tim Smith in pretty much every facet of the game imo.

He did start well. For a guy who'd not played for about a year due to a serious neck injury.

100% my feelings about him also Rogues.

And that pass to Joel was the number 1 moment of the magic weekend and as good as i have ever seen in a long long time.

Tim Smith has a lot of potential but he showed nothing at Wigan to suggest he will ever fulfil that potential, apart from a few sporadic moments of classy play he was very poor, particularly in defence.

On that basis a comparison with a solid player like Finch is ridiculous.

Tim Smith was OK for the last 20 minutes playing against a poor newly promoted Widnes side, for the other 60 he was his usual, awful self.

Thought Tim played really well at times last night particularly in 2nd half, some lovely handling and if you want to show a youngster the correct way to pass a football ,show them the ones to Isaac John for their first try and then the one for Richie Mathers try , ball presented to receiver at good angle and speed ,throw in the pass changes the angle of attack and you'll have a troubled defence- very good technically

and as for his try cant remember him running at a defence too often at Wigan but Classy footwork

had a quick chat with him after the game - said it got better as it went along , there is less pressure than at Wigan but he's older now so its up to him to be more consistent and handle the expectation

Different lad than a couple of years ago -which is good all round- hope he does well

Thats an excellent point, the stand off position in the last 15 years has seen many a player come and go and never really impress me apart from Trent Barrett. Nigel Wright, Danny Orr, Matty Johns, Henry Paul, Jules O'Neill, Greg Florimo. All came for big money and promise but never really delivered.

Tim Smith is the best passer of the ball in super league IMO. He just can't defend.

Smith can't run, can't tackle and can't even dance a little.
