| Steve Ganson obviously thought that there was something wrong with the Ablett tackle as he put it on report.
What should happen is this.
If the player is put on report then it should be an automatic 10 minute sin bin. In that period the match commissioner and / or video referee reviews the incident.
If they decide that it warrants a sending off then after the ten minute period the player is shown a red card and is sent off for the remainder of the match.
If they are unsure or decide it is not worthy of a sending off then the player is free to return after the ten minutes have elapsed.
The match review panel, would still review the incident on Monday as normal.
It's so simple, can anyone see any reasons why it wouldn't work.

What happens if the player is deemed to have accidently commited an offence? or if the incident wasn't as bad as it first appeared? Then they would be sin binned for nothing! I thought that was why we have the report system because the ref doesn't have sufficient information to make a judgement either way.

All games have cameras.
We watch the half time highlights under the West Stand at every game.
At present the match review panel judge on one camera for the majority of games.

He comes back on after 10 minutes. The referee must have judged that it was a major problem to put it on report.

What about a fight that is put on report?
Does the referee all 26 players involved in a mass brawl?

| The Ablett foul was clearly visible on immediate replay, and the fourth ref could easily have given Ganson the information to call the proper decision in good time.
We have video replays for tries, why not other incidents?
It would have saved the time and expense of Red Hall, and would have given the right decision on the day.
In the same way, Coley would not have been sent off if Ganson had asked for a video decision on the 'late' tackle.

I think all coaches have some kind of technology now that allows them to instantly review things. You could see (I think it was) Daryl Powell using it when their was a sky match the other week and it didn't look to me like he was using the actual sky footage to do it.
To be honest the video referee should have done something about it and to me you have to question why Bentham offered advice when Coley was sent off in France four weeks previous (which was clearly heard on the tv coverage) but not this time.

According to that Leeds muppet though, defences would then improve on either side as they have less men. FACT.

If a player commits a serious offence tho then the ref will sin bin or send off a player but if the ref is unsure about it or didn't see it then they put it on report. Well that is my understanding. Sometimes a player is put on report but then after review it is deemed no serious offence was commited. For example if someone is tackled head high but it was a accidental shot or a grab etc. In this case a penalty would be awarded but there is no need to sin bin the player. So if you send them for a video review then they are being penalised unfairly if that makes sense.

Tis what it needs, but there's a shortage of good refs when we only need 1 in a match.

| What was Bentham's role in all this?
A few years ago, as video ref at the DW he had no hesitation in recommending to the ref that McIlorum deseved a red card for his high shot on Ade Garndner.

| Not sure if letting the ref 'think about it'would work. Not only will there be the influence of other players and TVs to cater for, but also the situation could completely change the more they replay what they saw in their mind.
Ultimately though the referee has to continue officiate the game to the best oof his ability, especially in situations when it is in danger of spiralling out of control.

| Even if Ganson didn't see the initial incident, he was looking towards our end (where the screen was) when making his decision. Surely he could have been allowed to have glance at the screen to see the incident in more detail? I think more emphasis should be put on using the Sky screen for incidents other than tries. It seems to me that the technology is obviously there so why not use it to the full extent?

| I also agree the video ref could have been used, whether they just have a word in the ear of Ganson or go to the screen.

| as a neutral think this tackle or wat ever it was on tompkins was horrendous shud have been sent of the damage he could have caused could have been a travesty for the lad, also noticed that few of the rhinos players then targeted tompkins bad bad advertising for the game, wigan are to the team to beat don't have to beat the players literally..

no tries would be scored if they all went off for ten, therefore he was right

| Coaches watch the game in real time and have replays on their laptops.
Why can't the match commissionaire have access when the referee puts an incident on report?
Maybe you don't send the player off for ten minutes (although that would be my choice)
You allow him to stay on until the match commissionaire has reviewed the video and then relay the decision to the match referee. If it's an Ablett type tackle then off he goes.

The problem then would be the referees will begin to defer any big decision to the match commisioner (ala video refs) and then how long until a player scores or sets up a try in the minute between the referall and the decision?
All good ideas in theory, very unlikely to work in reality.
Best option is the introduction of 2 refs, but we need more fulltime refs then.

The issue there then becomes consistency, not the idea itself.
I can't see why, for instance on Friday, when Ganson and the TJs were having their mothers' meeting that the screen can't be used to help them adjudicate. There was one angle in particular where the incident looked horrendous, and I think had Ganson had that view of it he'd have been reaching for the red card rather quickly.
