| We got caned for penalties in the second half, and were one man down for 10 minutes, and still he's complaining!
What a joke.

| Lets not forget he blamed the weather, claiming Saints were playing in winter rugby conditions. I have yet to understand how we werent playing in the same weather.

Localised conditions.
Wigan end : dry and sunny.
Stains end : heavy downpours of sorrow and gnashing of teeth.

| It's hard for average coaches to accept they have been comprehensively and thoroughly outclassed by one of the best young NRL coaches in the game.
Nathan Brown is probably one of the only coaches to handle defeat with such grace and sportsmanship. His comments after the Saints/Hudds game were nice to see.
Richard Agar, Terry Matterson and now Mick Potter. Face it lads, Mike MaGuire is the best coach in Super League.
You didn't hear Tony Smith complaining do you? I have respect for the job he is doing at Warrington.

| We do push that tactic to the limit, and as I have said on other threads, I am often worried that we will give away a penalty each time.
However, it's playing to the rules, so there is no debate imo.

I've more an issue with the ref than Wigan. Wigan play the lying on game to the limit and if the ref allows them to do it, they will carry on.
The ref was awful yesterday (for both teams to be fair), he was blowing up constantly and it made for a stop start game. It was a disappointing spectacle.
Full credit to Wigan though, I thought defensively you were great.

I agree.
Coaches who are serious about wanting to be among the best should learn from their defeats, not come up with any excuse they can as to why it wasn't their fault.
I'm afraid there are some perennial whingers in SL, and Agar, Matterson and Potter are classic examples.
Going back a few years, I first realised we'd bought a lemon in John Dorahy when he immediately began making unconvincing excuses for our defeats. I'd never heard Graham Lowe or John Monie do that.

| Refs aren't penalising for lying on, they are penalising for messing around at the ptb. Wigan have got it down pat because they consistently get 3 men in the tackle and when they are told to get off, they get off cleanly. Three men getting off the tackle takes 2-3 seconds longer than two. It's not cheating and it's a fair tactic. Wigan started to get penalised when they couldn't get three men in and started messing around, it's what we got done for.
For me the ref didn't spoil the game, the players did for continually messing around at the ptb and Wilkin (again) seemed the worst for it for me, but I'm going off my view of the game at the ground as I haven't watched it again.
We seemed to let the occasion get the better of us, Wigan appeared more composed and took the chances that they got, we didn't. In games between the top clubs these days the margin between defeat and victory is small and that game showed it.

| You do push the tactic to the limit when tackling. Wigan are the Hudderfield of 2009! No law against it though I suppose as Stuart Cummings said last year. Last year we played hudds 3 times and beat them twice,so if your coach is good enough then there are ways to beat wrestling tactics. Maybe Potter is just not up to the job as many saints fans seem to think?

Spot on BL. Will you stop posting sense though as yourself, SaintPete and Codarmysaint ( ) among others are making Potter look like a right whinger and surely that can't be right!

| Saints started the 3rd man in the tackle and got away with it for along time, Joynt was a master of being the 3rd man in slowing play (aswell as the voluntry tackle)

| Rewatched the game and Saints were just as bad as us at lying down in the tackle. At the game, I knew our defence was good to hold Saints out, buut rewatched it back today, and it was borderline incredible. Never seen us stand up like that before and was pleasantly surprised. I'll admit that at the game I was expecting us to crack and concede more, but whatever Madge has done it's working.

| I think it's interesting that of the last 9 times our line has been breached, only 3 have resulted in tries! That is some goal line defense!

Yep.
The downside when you are the defending team is that with 3 in the tackle, one has to get back 10m into the defensive line. This means a lot more work in defence, and imo, one of the reasons Feka has been dropped.
