When St Helens can think of a convincing sounding excuse - i.e. the state of the surrounding roads, the state of the surrounding pavements, police concerns about black ice in St Helens town centre, health and safety rules regarding swine flu, etc.
In other words, anything other than the condition of their stadium and pitch - when this time last year, Leigh were able to host us in a similar fixture and were given no problems at all by a howling blizzard.

| Taken from the Official Saints site........
OFFICIALS will inpect the pitch at the GPW Recruitment Stadium ahead of Sunday's Festive Derby with Wigan.
There has been significant thaw ahead of the clash and the club is confident the game will go ahead.
News of the inspection will appear here tomorrow morning.
The game is scheduled to kick off at 3pm on Sunday December 27 and fans will be able to 'pay on the day'.

| I live what should be a 2 minute walk away from the ground, and right now its dangerous to try and walk or drive in any of the side streets tbh.Only the main roads are safe, even the black bull car park is like an ice rink.Unless it defrosts quick style fans will drop like flies getting to the game.

| If the pitch is good enough the game should be on.
Everyone knows the roads and pavements are bad so it should be up 2 the individual if they want 2 make the trip or not IMO.
It's not like anyone is being forced 2 go 2 the game! If your happy in the knowledge it's gonna be slippy under foot and still wanna go then so be it

Your missing all the points of health and safety. The Saints club has a duty not too think like that. Like Latics did last week when they called off the game against Bolton.

Why tho?
We are all adults and if they offer a weather/condition warning then it should be up 2 the individual if they wish 2 make the trip.
I realise it's why they called the football off but IMO it's something the police shouldn't have the power 2 do.
All I can speak from is a personal opinion and IMO i'm in full knowledge that's it's slippy under foot but I'm prepared 2 risk it. If I fall and hurt my leg then it's no ones fault but mine really.

Shouldn't that have meant supermarkets should have closed their doors from last Monday onwards? Don't they have 'Duty of care'?
Whats the difference?

Exactly! What's the difference between the shops in town or the clubs & pubs tonight? People should make their own minds up on stuff like this.
No one is forcing anyone to do anything they don't wanna do. So I say if the pitch is ok the game should be played.

What about people who have already bought tickets, and don't want to take the risk of travelling and walking on the dangerous pavements?

Think the L@tics v Bolton decision was taken mainly due to the fact that it was too icey and snowy to have a mounted police presence at the game, and given that it was a derby wendyball game, between teams with a known idiot element, and a relegation 6 pointer, the real risk was that the threat of violence was too significant to deal with without mounted police. as much as they state it was health and safety issues i think you'll find these were the real reasons and i would expect the game was called off due to the fact that the police wouldnt allow it to go ahead.
If you read between the lines of the clubs press release it pretty much says as much - it was just a PR exercise by the club not to look bad bringing other elements into it.
Unless theres more snow tonight which looks unlikely I cant see our game not going ahead.

I think is called hard luck.
When people purchased there tickets which i have done i must add. Did you not realize it was winter and that we could have ice or snow under foot after all it is Christmas time.
It makes me wonder just how we all went on when we played in winter. I must have imagined the crowds we got in conditions like this. Is this heath and safety gone mad or just supporters gone soft.

When we played in Winter, we had more than our fair share of games called off - Have a look at Bilko's text on past saints derbys for example.

Think you've read far too much in to that situation - fact is, it would have been unsafe to have had 17,000 people all converging on the same place in such weather conditions. There's even an inspection at the LSV at 10am tomorrow to determine whether the game will go ahead because of the car parks and approach roads, despite the pitch being 100% playable.

Because we didn't have undersoil heating, nor the same legal obligations on fan safety. You're talking like it's people being soft, when the sad reality is there's bugger all you can do to avoid the regulations. Put in the same situation as we are now, back in 1964 winter rugby you'd still have games being called off.

Because in this day and age, despite a lot of "adults" choosing the attend the game, somebody somewhere will fall over and then sue - not the official line, just an observation.

I think that if we were playing winter rugby in this age of health and safety mania, even given that some SL clubs have got themselves modern stadia, there would be all sorts of problems with match cancellations. Last winter was fairly cold, and this winter, thus far, has been problematic.
