Quote ="Pieman"I spoke to some Latics fans at work the other day and they hate IL as they think he tried to kill them off with wanting the stadium and not the team, I had to put them straight after our phone conversation

This is the problem with a large part of the latics fanbase. I know RL fans, and wiganers in general, are not famed for their intelligence, but a large amount of their fanbase are something else. A significant amount are simply unintelligent. This, alongside a longstanding inferiority complex and a big chip on their shoulder, fuels their anti-rugby bile.
I tried to challenge a group of latics fans recently on the nonsense they were spouting about ‘leneghan trying to kill their club’ but there is no reasoning with them. You can’t get any logic or objectivity, just subjective nonsense.
I explained the only reason leneghan got involved was as there were no buyers showing interest or none with sufficient funds to stump up guarantees for their 6m running losses in the next two years, plus 3m for the purchase of the ground. Hence leneghan attempted to get a number of partners involved to save the club – by splitting the assets and liabilities to allow the club to survive. He was trying to protect the interests of both clubs and allow them to remain in business when liquidation looked the most likely result, and you could hardly blame him for not wanting to put himself or Wigan RL at financial risk by taking on their running losses.
The same accusation was made of Lindsay (tried to kill the club), which when challenged for what he actually did, amounted to nothing more factually than a flippant distasteful remark about being a ‘thriving little club’ and not letting them play a cup tie with Liverpool at central park!!
It was exactly the same mentality with the administrators, when they were receiving insults and death threats for being unable to sell the club when there was not interest to buy them. The same administrators who secured write off of £25m debts and allowed the sale of the stadium and club to lower bids than for the assets alone, simply to preserve the football club. Its no wonder they levelled the very same point about a large proportion of their fans not being intelligent enough to understand the realities of the situation.
I tried to challenge all of this with facts and objectivity, explaining they should ask themselves ‘how would an intelligent independent person outside of wigan react to such petty arguments’ they maintained that they regularly tell away fans the same thing who agree with them!! This is their slanted view of the world where they bend and stretch the truth into exaggeration and hyperbole to attempt to justify their ridiculous position. Unfortunately its also likely this ridiculous narrative which is sold to the bahranis and is fuelling the animosity between the two clubs.
