Quote ="billys pineapple"Ashurst, Robinson and Laughton was probably as good a back row as I have seen in my time watching Wigan. Ashurst was big skilfull and a bit of the animal in him one of my favourite all time players.
Dave Robinson was a really hard working second row a bit like a refined Mick Cassidy but in my opinion better going forward than Mick.
Dougie was your complete allround forward who had everything and was a great leader.
They all complemented each other to form a formidable back row and all played for GB at the same time.'"
Agree probably the best back row that the club has had in my lifetime.
Robinson came with a great reputation but not sure if he delivered what was probably expected of him?
I was 13 in 1970 so I thought we were the only team in the competition and if we lost it was always the ref's fault. After several years of being total poop the early 70's promised a new era which sadly didn't last very long and didn't win the most coveted cup of them all at the time the CC.
We did I believe have an unbeaten run of 30 odd games during 1970 & 1971 which was a record in the game at the time and the back row played a major part in that fantastic run.
Oh how I wish we had Bill Ashurst now. A total maverick but great to watch and had a brilliant kicking game which I don't think any Wigan player since has come close to being anywhere near as good with perhaps only Andy Farrell being gifted enough to be mentioned honourably in the same sentence.
I remember Ashurst getting absolutely snotted by Jim Mills at Widnes after he returned from a spell Australia with Penrith. Fans today would have gagged for a life sentence for Mills after his attack on Ashurst. The game has gone soft compared to those days but to fair my owd feller used to say the same thing when he compared Ken Gee and co with forwards of the early 70's.
Great days and very nearly a great team.
