Maybe the two points you raise are linked regarding the decision not to go for two and the throwing of an hissy fit when asked a question if he thought his job was on the line.
He may have been told before the match that a win was expected if he wanted to keep his job, then when it came to making the decision not to go for two he was so obsessed with going for the win, the thought that taking the two to guarantee a top four finish was the furthest thing in his mind.
