A fellow Wiganer and myself travelled back from the Middle East (Oman) for this Game. As I drove through the Oman mountains to Muscat for my flight I passed a sign that said Al Wigan (there is actually a village in Oman called Al Wigan). Flew Home Friday to Heathrow and drove up to Wigan so we could travel down to Wembley with everyone on the Saturday. Was in the Wigan end by the posts and saw Ellery Hanley's try. For those who had followed Wigan through the late 60's, 70's & 80's it must be hard to find a better day to be a Wiganer. An old fellow next to me was in tears saying he'd waited 20 odd years for this - 27 nil is forever burned in my memory!!

Found the ticket for this game yesterday in a box of old papers! Hadn't missed a game all season then missed Ellerys wonder try because I was bursting for a wee and couldn't hold out til half time.

Just picked up on this thread. I was there as well, stood in the bottom paddock. Gary Connolly, playing as an amateur, IIRC, dropped the first punt downfield, Kevin Iro scored his first try following this, and it never improved for Saints at all for the rest of the afternoon.
I remember thinking 'how the ell did he score that?' as Hanley weaved in and then out, before gliding away to score under the posts. It was the first part of the payback for the two 1960s losses.

And unlike the second of those, this one was achieved entirely fairly.

The 1990 win against us was a much more memorable result for your lot.
