If my memory serves me right he was a butcher. If the team won he would bring meat in for the players. He was one of the great characters of our game, the likes of he and Piggy Fletcher are legends.

It was interesting to read about that game which I remember quite clearly for some reason. It is true that Peter scored in his final game but it was far from straightforward because Wigan were winning convincingly but were attempting to put a try "on a plate" for him. Lets say the attempts to do this were very poor and each time the ball finished on the floor or over the touchline. Wigan were attacking the scoreboard end down the right and were in the last seconds of the game when someone made a half break and as he was tackled he flung an inside ball to no-one in particular and happily straight into Peters hands who crashed through two tacklers to score. At the end he did a lap of honour on the players shoulders as the OP stated.

My other memory of Peter was when he was coach of the A team and I stood near the dugout on the Douglas side on a cold winters night and Keith Mills was trainer, which involved using the extensive medical equipment provided ie. a bucket of cold water, an old bladder and a sponge. Peter was saying how cold it was so I was surprised when he plunged his hand into the bucket but then produced a bottle of whisky from which he had a hearty swig! Sadly Peter was taken from us too early.

Referee for that Keighley game was Gerry Kershaw, even after all this time that name gives me the chills.

Smethursts' time at Wigan finished in unfortunate circumstances at the end of Vince Karalius' regime - he gave great service on and off the pitch as he was only a stop gap signing some years previously.
