In Australia most NRL clubs have a 'Leagues club' (some have more than one)

If you are not familiar with the principle of them, they basically raise revenue to support and promote the club. They provide decent meals, subsidised beer, poker machines (similar to your fruit machines) and operate a members policy.

A decent leagues club is a great revenue raiser for a club. My personal favourite is the Canberra Raiders one at Queanbeyan (I lived not far from there for a few years)

Get Wetherspoons in to run the bars . Cheap beer is almost nailed on to draw the crowds .
We came down Saturday , got off the coach , walked straight past the ground and found a Wetherspoons .
We still had to put up with the RU game on the telly , but saved a fortune on the beers .

Barry, from one Aus to another, you're completely lost mate and need to do some reading around the club history. Culturally you're just not getting it. Have you just landed?

For starters, it doesn't own any land or property, or come to think of it any assets whatsoever, so how are you proposing a League club?

Second - it's pulling in circa 3k home fans, who actually live wide and far across this wonderful (but immensely spread out) city. When will they use it?

Third - no UK sport has a tradition of a League club in the Aus fashion. They're not traditional. British gambling culture isn't like the Aus one.

There's plenty of other reasons, but don't go thinking that because it works in Aus, it'll work here. Good on you for trying though.

As an Aussie you know that the leagues club doesnt have to be directly at the ground.

I use the Raiders club at Queanbeyan as a prime example. Great place. Buffet all you can eat lunches for members at $12 a shot. Steaks, seafood....you name it. It was chockers there every lunchtime.


It would be quite possible to set up a Quins 'leagues' club somewhere in a more central part of London. Take over a Wetherspoons....or the type of place one of the Walkabouts is situated. If you are trying to generate a bit of interest in the club amongst Aussies ....what better way to do it? A 'leagues club' style thing for Harlequins.

I reckon it's a goer.

Correct. The idea of the club spending millions of £ on a league club in London, simply taking over a Wetherspoons or a Walkabout is one of the funniest I have ever heard. Maybe we could build a 100,000 seater Stadium encompassing Tower Bridge and people might begin to notice us?

Why

I've been to stacks of Leagues clubs in Aus and dont understand the non match day attraction. A building with hundreds of pokies and a TAB-
Good for a pre match drink which is no different from our Kings bar.

Since I challenged you some hours ago you have come up with nowt.

So I will give you my thought - these gimmics (as you see them) are a band aid to entice a few additional punters who might not normally attend and hopefully will like what they see and come back. Frankly (and this is not meant as a dig) focusing on the back packer market is a waste of time - they are by their nature transient, here for the beer and partying and not much else.

The clubs main thrust (should be) putting MASSIVE efforts into junior rugby league development throughout the Twickenham / Richmond area and the region in general AND the club clearly spearheading this jointly with the RFL. Make rugby league kids no 1 interest, get them attached to the Quins RL and then work on the parents, etc. This is a work in progress and a long term approach and will only bear fruits in 3, 4, 5 years ......

In the meantime, dont pee off your core support, roll out all the gimmics, be innovative in promoting the club and get a team on the paddock that can win games.

Stop looking at things in isolation, some things work, some don't and most have been tried many many times before, listen up when people who know tell you that league clubs don't work in the UK, because they don't, listen up when people tell you that the hard core supporter base is spread very wide across the South East meaning travelling into London outside of game days simply for a mickey up, won't work.

Your point about the chain rattlers not giving a stuff to come down the Stoop for a game is very valid, hence why no marketing is worth it's while being aimed at them.

Your point about the sport not being in the psyche of the Southern public is also valid and well known, hence all marketing should be aimed at our local community and on organic growth of the love of the sport for many decades.
