Perhaps if we played more expansive rugby a la Cas it would be far more attractive and productive
Ex Players like Broughton Eden and Brierley could be USED to their full abiliy and potential instead of being stifled and discarded as "surplus to requirements" instead of giving thought to HOW they could best be used
The methods and style weve adapted arent bearing much reward at the moment
Perhaps its our "STYLE" as you mention that requires examination and not the "remodelling" of players
UUm - interesting food for thought!'"
But changing our style to fit two players isn't going to work for the majority is it.

Changing our style might win us a game. We actually look good when we throw it about, back a few seasons ago we easily defended our errors and just had fun.
Trying to be structured in Super League isn't right good when most teams are better than it than you.
On Brierly. I'm sad to see a young half back with bags of confidence leave our club, probably feeling abit worse than he was when he arrived.
Such is sport. I hope Rick has a plan.
Losing him at this point in the season is risky. Gaskell touch wood is doing okay with injuries so far and Danny Brough can't go a week without being banned.

| interesting we paid leigh 50k to bag brierley, think we have got near enough most of that back
when we signed brierley i thought he may be the long term replacement for brough, didnt work out that way!
full back didnt go too well and neither did half back with brough
would we have been better keeping brierley for the future and working with him and get rid of brough instead?
never worked well for scotland with brough and brierley either.... was brought the problem?
maybe brierley just wasnt good enough, maybe we will find out in years to come, can see why he would want to return to playing under his former coach and he will go down a storm in that league and the championship next season.
he actually had a great try to game ratio for us, 15 in 25 i think !
thanks for scoring those tries at hull kr ryan and helping to keep us in sl..... i suppose in that sense he was worth the punt!

| Would of been interesting if we had a quota spot available if we could of made a mid season signing with the cap space. I don't think there are any English players really available that would be willing to come to us given the mess we seem to be in.

| The players we have let go over the years who have gone on to be successful elsewhere is astonishing. Brierley is another who is coached incorrectly.
For me he would have acted as a sweeper only, tackling after 1st line of defense has been broken, then in attack he should have been on the shoulder of both props for the offload with another pacey player at the other side of the props so the opposition were unsure which side we were going to unload.
Most successful sides keep unloading and moving the opposition around.
At the same time I can understand Brierley`s move, as he didn`t fit in with Stone`s type of game, which isn`t mine but I will respect the coaches style of play hoping that things will improve, as different styles of play can bring success.

But the majority are playing a game that is boring at best, and liable to get us relegated at worst. Something needs to shift drastically jools, Not saying Brierley was the answer but what we have now is far from it either.

| Big fan of him but you can't argue with letting him go unfortunately. Looked better at FB than anywhere IMHO, brilliant support player but unable to influence a game when given the opportunities this season. A player of his age/ experience should be chomping at the bit when in the team. Compare to Gaskell, only a year older but a much greater influence on a game and potent attacking force from what I've seen so far. Brierley was a finisher really with glimpses of being a creator.
Shame we couldn't keep him as don't feel hes had a fair amount of time but totally understandable he wants first team rugby and we don't want to pay him to warm the bench/ improve. l'm sure we'll see better from Brierley and I wish him well, no doubt he'll be back in super league at some point.
With regards HB's will it be Izaac Farrell to be promoted? thats why the Wigan lad has been signed. It was said by those in the know Stone has a reputation for promoting good young players and hes not been afraid to play them. Ellis could be back next season maybe too.
And for as many players we've offloaded and become successful elsewhere theres a few come here and done well.

| It's the right move sadly. We are not a good enough team to accomodate a player like Ryan at the moment. One of the best support players you are likely to see with those instincts engrained into his game. Not creative enough however, and our need for the latter outweighs the former. His defence was also sub par at times. Nice bloke and good proffesional and I wish him well. Massive shame it did not work out but I think it is right for the club.

Get real. Huby has achieved what in the short time since he left. kopzack won the league with us and played well. He has played well with Salford and won nothing. Kirmond played in play off games for us and has achieved virtually nothing at Wakefield. Eden was a liability at full back and although playing well now in a good side has achieved nothing since he left.
If Brierley was good enough then other super league teams would have been looking to sign him.

No Jools I fully concede that point and that of other posters on here
You don't need to raise the playing standard of the team and entertain the crowds if the attendance figures don't increase anyway ! May as well just continue playing same old whilst others turn themselves around and leave us wallowing Sorry I'd rather witness the influence Brett had those alongside him than us stagnate to fit "just pull on a pair of shorts" performances
As for the question re how many of those named have gone on to greater things?
As an answer " How many are playing in teams in a lower position than us at the moment?
As regards the main focus of this topic - the team that offloaded him and who many on here thought would struggle may also have used him better
But maybe you're right!
We were saved from relegation last year by scintillating rugby and a coat of paint so why change a winning formula to accommodate a player we'd pursued for a considerable period.
Similar posters called for the sacking of a coach because "it wasn't working"
I can't say I've noticed us going onto greater things either
But try and convince me
I'll accept that - but can't accept others accepting offloading Brierley as nothing to get concerned about
What were you expecting - another Brett Hodgson ?
Yeah! Right!
No if Brierley was not "doing it right" and "doing it right" is bringing us success I can wear it
Is that the case?
I rest mine!

They are all players who have played better at other clubs than they did at the Giants.
E.G
Huby at cas great.
At Giants gash.
at Wakey good.
Maybe a small pattern but a pattern.
From comments on the forum I think it would be fair to say that most posters would swap the following
Clough wakeman. For Huby and Kopczak
Broughton for. Ormsby
Kirmond for ferguson
Etc.
How many players do we have who are not good enough. How many have we let go who are probably better at the current time.
At the end of the day we have brought players in who for whatever reason have not reached their potential whilst at the Giants. Either they were the wrong signings at the time which is a concern or the were the right players at the time that we could not get to work at the Giants which is a concern.
Either the recruitment of brierley was wrong or the coaching and tactics were wrong. I don't buy this if he was good enough he would have made it in any team. Half backs more than anyone are dependent on what the forwards give them and the backs are capable of doing.
Everyone knew Brierley was a support player who finished off breaks. He was not a kicker he was not an organiser he was not a magician in the halves.
We never ever used him in terms of his strengths. We should either not have bought him or should have used him properly.
But to be honest it was a panic buy because our recruitment has been dire since Brown left

No- he wasn't brought in to play in the halves though was he? Anderson had one idea, stone another. Our wonderful new coach decided that he wasn't a fullback and brought in one from Aus.
For me brierley will not make it as a half back in SL. He doesn't have the full skill set. Whether he would have made a better fullback- we will probably not know. Stone thought not.
But then Stone doesn't seem to be doing so well ATM.

| Bloody hell its hard work !
At the risk of repeating myself - why the hell then did we buy him to convert him into a full back
Weve had that "illness" for b---y years
We messed araound with Lawrence when he was playing centre -then he could perhaps be a winger -then 2nd row We bulked the lad up and now posters criticise him as purely being a tackling machine with little go forward ! He was playing well inside Cudjoe and tightened up the wing defence --but oh no lets mess!
Thorman was on the verge of being a full international in the halves with a bright future --and hey lets make him into a Full nack who with a speedy 2nd rower like Tai running at him was like "try time"
Robinson was an eye opener at half back on the Aus tour - but hey lets make him into a hooker where his "scoot" impact can be minimised - and it generally was
If youre lacking in a position for goodness sake buy someone whos come through the junior ranks playing there and to whom its second nature instead of perpetually asking for this damned utilty concept
Cudjoe was becoming a pretty good back up goal kicker -but theres been no evidence of utilising the fact for seasons even when Broughie was having a mare
So once again the knifes gone in the foot and we stalked a player whos had limited chance to show his worth (IMO) Fastest player, static, putting the ball in the scrum instead of taking it firstor second receiver
A bloody joke ! But hey what next -- Tai in the centres? Would`nt be surprised !

Agree with that. admittedly we should have kept Hodgson, still can't believe we let him go. If we replace Brierley with a decent, solid creative half I'll be more than happy.
