You were told only part of the story... Basically, Giants were not offering George a first team contract, but they also refused to release him. So his Dad had to pay 10k to get him out of his contract and sign for Wire. As mentioned, Toby was told he would never make it, so followed his brother.
I'm sure they would have loved to stay at Hudds, but unfortunately at the time Pete Riding was at the club.

So he was an U19 player on an U19 contract but (his dad) wanted a first team contract. The Giants didn't offer him a first team contract so he went elsewhere.
It seems here's another example of us not having the money that the big clubs do....

Pretty much, except the Giants also would not release him from his contract to sing for anyone else. So his Dad had to pay him out of his contract. Pretty poor from the Giants to be fair, potentially killing someone's career. Good to see he's doing well, just a shame he's not doing it at his home town club.

Killing someone's career? Think that's being overdramatic- He's only just turned twenty, and has been at Warrington a while which means he still had a few years in our academy to go. If we can't afford to give a youngster a first team contract then we can't. Doesn't mean that he wouldn't have been offered something at a later date. Not many 17 year olds on a first team contract! Sounds to me like wire scouts did a little poaching!!!!!! They have the cash to splash and the offer of a deal that we just weren't able to match seemed to be a lure. As for not Releasing him from his contract- releasing someone from their contract so they can sign for someone else- is that what we really want the club to do? its something the Giants have been slated for in the past!

Huh? Don't think you listened/read anything I said.... Warrington were not willing to buy him out of his contract, that's why his dad had to pay the money. No poaching done whatsoever. Giants did not want him, but refused to release him.

No poaching done? So why were Warrington sniffing round then - and why when you read up about him is his move to wire attributed to wire scouts???
How can you say giants didn't want him, when they didn't want to release him. if they didn't want him surely they WOULD have released him? Sounds to me like they wanted him- but couldn't or wouldn't pay a first team contract- we don't have the money to splash on our academy as wire do as we don't have the money coming into the club to give first team contracts to 17 year olds!

| We wanted to keep them from what i believe but Warrington offered more money than we could offer them, so off they went.
Not sure if this is the full story, but lack of finances was certainly something to do with it, and yet people still think we can just "get rid" or "go out and get" certain players!

Where do they think we get the funding from? The sky money covers the first team wages.
Then there's season ticket/gate money, (lower than most SL teams) merchandise profit money, (again lower than most) sponsorship and Giants lottery. We don't make any money from food or drink etc bought at the stadium as some clubs do.
This has to cover stadium rent, stewarding, fan zone stuff, marketing and all the back room staff, printing, ticketing, team kit, transport, (including a costly trip to France) coaching staff, physios, medical staff, insurance, tax, business rates and vat etc,
Then there's a whole academy to pay for......

I know that Giants haven't been making a profit- that information is published. I also know because Ken Davy himself told me that under the stadium agreement the Giants have to pay £5 for EVERY person that attends a rugby game at the stadium- even if that person gets in as a "free" child or on a free ticket. He also told me that at that time he was personally paying £10,000 a WEEK of his money to bankroll the club.
That may well have changed- but I can't see it having gone down much. We are the poor relations to many clubs- don't kid yourself!

No they don't have anyone else to share their grounds-which means they can do what they want when they want with them-and can choose how much to pay for stewarding costs etc. Hull KR Cas and Wakey also make money from their stadia via food and drink sales.

| Poor relations of rugby? I've heard it all now. We're not poor relations and have a good income stream and can compete with the top clubs in the competition like we have done for a number of years. Yes we've had a poor season but look how preseason and then the season started with players leaving to go with fallouts within the dressing room, injuries that ended a career, and constant injuries throughout the year, apparent poor coaching and "coaches favourites" etc. Add all of this up and it's not too surprising that we've had some poor results and finished where we have done.
We'll finish with a SL spot by the end of the qualifiers and after giving Stones a full preseason and add some new recruits we'll be fine again next season and up there with the best of them like we've become used to. Don't get all of this negativity towards the club and a reason I keep well clear of the site nowadays.

It's not about negativity- it's about reality of why our club has even survived let alone competed. We do so because ken Davy spends at least 1/2 a million pounds a year of his money in order for us to do so!!!! If he didn't we'd be in a very different position!

hope your right
for me we have missed the chance to actually win something now, topping the league and getting in those semi final play off games seem a long way off now, good while it lasted though

I have nothing but admiration for Mr Davy, But I do wonder sometimes why a man who is not a traditional RL fan, and not a Huddersfield man, "as far as I know" would keep putting 1/2 a million pounds a year into a business, without the slightest chance of ever getting anything back, except of course 20% of the stadium is always going to be worth something. He would have been far better off with one of a few other clubs, who would have given him a far better return, certainly in terms of paying fans. Bit of a strange one for me.

| Went to school with them and sat next to Toby! Both were always head and shoulders above everyone else. A crime we never picked them up. Although, off the top of my head they were fartown fans when I was a kid (actually, nobody was. I think it was just me and one other girl in my year in the whole school...)

His wife is the rugby league fan- she watched the game before they were married. He got involved via sponsorship and I guess like many of us do after being introduced to the sport became a fan.

a good piece on ken davy here recently, if you read it all it will give you a few pointers on how he got involved
started with a 6 figure sum to the club as a donation as they were in dire straights, he wanted to remain anonymous too!
