| I dont really think he could be blamed for either try and for the disallowed one the Hull player had a run at the ball while Hodgson was under the ball so he was always going to struggle with that one.
Teams will always target certain players with kicks just like the Giants targetted Will Sharp. This may have had nothing to do with his defence more to do with kicking towards Hodgson on attack because he is such a good finisher.
As for taking high kicks in defence he is not brilliant but is far better than a lot of players. For instance Richard Whiting couldnt deal with Broughs bombs at all on sunday.

| Quote ="PBGIANT"Have to partly agree with fro nips on this one.
I dont think anyone can knock his effort and attacking skills but for me his defensive skills are his downfall. He may score 2 tries in a game but he's likley to conceed as many as he scores. I cringe wherever a ball is kicked towards him and it is only down to the fact he has has a good defensive centre to his right that we havent conceeded more tries down or left side!
Who would I rather see on the wing? Jerry and Leroy to be honest and if Simpson [iis going to come into the squad[/i I think David could be in for a nervous time. [iI'd much rather see a backline of Grix, Jerry, Bruno, Simpson and Leroy.[/i'"
Thats a bit hasty isnt it PBG --youre already up for replacing him with a player you aint seen much of --and who you`re not sure is going into the squad???
Hell --he really IS up agin it!!

My point exactly! The point i am trying to make is that i dont see the need for a thread everytime someone has an ok game. We have a MOM thread so if people think he did well, why not just write it in there?!

He had an ok game against Warrington and Castleford but didn't score any tries. He scores twice against Hull and gets slated for it on here - there is no pleasing some people. They expect him to play like a machine.

Who is slating him?!?!
Just as i dont agree with people unecessarily putting our players down, i dont think hyping up an individual for something that is expected is really necesary, are we going to start a thread when Horne doesnt knock in a game and say [i'where are all the knockers now' [/ihe didnt knock on!! its part of the game and something which is expected. Hodgsons tries were good, i wouldnt say they were better than Jermaines at Cas, as Brearly said why didnt we have a thread for that last week?
With statements like the above its like we are trying to wind each other up its stupid, we have enough people who like to have a go at us before we start doing it to ourselves

| Quote ="'fro nips"Without sounding like I have some sort or agenda against Dodge (which I don’t, he is in our team and I will always give a chance to anyone wearing the claret and gold). Is it really all about scoring trys?! For example, Kevin Penny, Shaun Ainscough and Karl Pryce, these three spring to mind as having a great try scoring record, but would any of you have them in your team? I dont think so, defensively they are poor, make too many errors, and with the exception of Pryce are poor under the high ball. Hodgson for me is similar, he is good, but for the money he will be on you would want him to be brilliant, like Pat Richards, I think he is ok dont get me wrong, but is he really any better than one of our exciting youngsters? Fair play praising people after a good game, Hodgson took his tries well, but he was also at fault for another one, and was lucky that Hull had another down his side disallowed for offside, i dont get all the praise over someone scoring two tries, one a walk in. Brough set up three tries and has hardly got a mention?! Just my opinion
'"
That would be the brilliant Pat Richards who made nearly half as many tackles and missed nearly twice as many as David Hodgson last season?
Hodgson is one of the best defensive wingers in Superleague.
ATEOTD he has played over 50 Superleague matches plus CCup under Nathan Brown, that would suggest that either :
a) he has some incriminating pictures of NB somewhere
or
b) he is much better than most of our fans rate him.
I know which I'd go for.

| The reason i started the thread to give Hodgy some recognition was specifically because on virtually EVERY other thread someone has a go at him. i was trying to redress the balance.
I think in that i have succeeded. Hodgson might not be the worlds best winger but he has done agood job for us and will continue to do a good job until the end of the season. If he stays after that it will be NBs decision and i am happy to go along with that , whatever it is.

| Just to quote Paul Cullen on Boots & ALL tonight.
"Sam Obst doesn't have the best kicking game in the world and they kick it straight to a top class international winger"
Yes David Hodgson.

| And which club is Paul Cullen coaching at these days?
I'll say it again nobody disputes Davids attacking qualities. He has to be one of the best finishers in the comp (20+ tries last season) but his defence is poor! And he isnt alone. I can only think of 1 possibly 2 top quality defensive winger in SL (Joel Monaghan and Tom Briscoe). You will find that most wingers in the league can finish tries well and have good attacking skills but most struggle with defense.
With DH you are as likley to see him score two tries as you are to see him conceed two tries. He is terrible under the high ball (but then again most wingers are)!
And before anyone starts I have no personal agenda about David Hodgson. I will support him at the club and cheer for him etc but the above is my opinion.

| Every season the 'fans' of the Giants pick a couple of players that no matter what can do nothing good or right.
Inevitably there is a winger and another Player.
Wingers mistakes are ALWAYS easy to sieze on, it's always the last thing in a set that happens either a try scored or a try missed so it's easy to point out the errors.
When was the last time we had a winger no one grumbled about?

you are right about the wingers bit.
When Aspinwall came back from his injury he was a scapegoat everyone said Too slow.
I remember when it was Dave Hooson runs like a crab or Ken senior too old.
The only time we dont get on the wingers back is when we can blame the full back. Chris Thorman anyone
The other problem that we have at the minute is that wingers and centres have to work as a team. A poor winger with a good centre can look really good Ade Gardener looked like a world beater as you would with Jamie Lyon and that other aussie inside you.
Also centre and Wing partnerships take time to develop. We have had lots of changes in this area and still do not seem to know who are our best combinations. Yesterday Gilly threw a pass into touch whose fault was it Gilly for not looking, Hodgy for coming inside, both of them or just the fact that they were not used to playing with each other. ( note to Nathan get them both in the bath together with a bar of soap that will get them working as a team as neither will want to drop the soap).
Leroy , lawrence, jerry, Gilly, hodgson what is the best combination. Losing Fatz was a blow to us and i think that is coming home to us now. Hopefully Simpson can plug the gap and allow us to have a bit of consistency.

| I can see one of the second rowers moving to centre tbh , why have signed so many as they are so versatile, fast, good hands, strong and good tacklers, maybe Dale Ferguson will be a centre at the Giants?

yeah thats spot on,lets drop the only true world class finisher we have and the top scorer for just about every club he's played for including every season he's played for us because he like every other player drops a ball or missed a tackle!!
jeez i despair with our fans sometimes.

| interesting:
carries:
hodgson 32-45 mcgillvary
metres:
hodgson 181-399 mcgillvary
tackles:
hodgson 14-14 mcgillvary
missed tackles:
hodgson 3-3 mcgillvary
offloads:
hodgson 2-2 mcgillvary
runs from dummy half:
hodgson 8-2 mcgillvary
errors:
hodgson3-4 mcgillvary
are just a select few but i think what it shows is that they are 2 different types of wingers, jerry is more direct with ball in hand whereas hodgy is more workmanlike, coming into the middle to take the ball up for example, both made the same amount of tackles, both missed the same, both made more or less the same errors yet hodgson is the one who gets lambasted every day ?
