| Quote ="Cripesginger"3rd, 5th and 4th finishes have not been accomplished by the Giants in 40 or 50 years? Very impressive when several clubs are full cap and a couple 'over the cap'.
NB did have some very good fortune:
Giants had a decent underperforming squad in 08.
A few good young players were emerging.
Lunt joined as an 'unknown'
Moore was a risky signing come good.
[uOf massive significance was that Brett Hodgson had already been signed!!![/u
NB did improve many technical aspects of our game AND had the very good sense to bring Bumper.
outsiders don't realise that some of the young talent signed by the club like Patrick and Wardle and Eden had stuff all to do with NB.
In the end the gifted prodigy is unable to resist too much tinkering, having favourites and lacks some inner steel. He will produce teams that are often good to watch but struggle to win silverware.
A gifted assistant.'"
A gifted assistant can do quite well, look at Saints this year, from 9th to top 4. With some gifted assistants.
If he can get Saints playing stuff that is good to watch, then the rest of the club will be able to get him home the rest of the way.
He's moving into a machine, in a way his job is to tinker with the machine. If he can migrate us up a couple of notches then that's what we need. Brown and Maguire where spoken of in the same breath in terms of defence and we need that. He can also bring on younger players especially backlines, great that is where we are weakest.
Our pack match it up every week and Cunningham will still have a hand in that.
I'm not after year on year GF wins (I'll take em, but I think dynasty's like that do not happen very often).
But if in his 3 years with us, if he can pick up 2 pieces of silverware then that will be a good result. If he picks up one. Then I think he will get a par rating from fans, anything less than that he will start to fall into a Potter, Simmons type coach rating.

A nice fantasy.

That is plain silly, believe it if you need to.
If you think the following are smart moves you will love NByou could not make this stuff up.
He had a far better , bigger machine at St George and under achieved.

Any knowledgable saints fan who digs deeper than headlines will have some genuine concerns. No amount of bluster or condescending comments about the giants will change that.

| cant say agree with durham at all, i think nathan brown has done a great job at the club, his main success to me has been to bring through a lot of good young english talent, not to mention our highest league placings in my 47 years of watching the club and until 2 months ago he was still regarded by the majority of doing a great job, imo he will win silverware at saints, thanks for the memories nathan hope now baloo takes the baton to the next stage.

Tend to agree with goodie and not Durham.
Except think the cracks where showing a bit before , and I don't think he will win silverware at saints. Tbh I'll be surprised if he is even still at saints at the end of next season. Mark my words folks - get down to the bookies....

| He has been brilliant in the development of young players but then has countered that by his tinkering with them once in place, and I'd say he has been fortunate in coming to the team just as some of our best young backs are breaking in to the team.
Kirmond and Lunt didnt deserve to be shifted off - Kirmond could have been a great back row or centre he definately wasn't a prop
Lunt is going to get a Wembley appearance this season so he'll be chuffed.
But he gets us great form early on then blows it.
It's not been an unmitigated disaster - but it has been a travesty of missed opportunity.

Quote I can argue the point very validly and i am glad he has gone.
I did not join in the bunting waving and getting the champagne out after the first few games.
Our game against London was a killer. We won quite comfortably but got absolutely battered in the forwrds. I said at the time once we come up against a good team who are organised and have decent backs we will be knackered as our pack is featherweight.
Every time one of our poster puts up the OPTA stats i have said we Have no go forward from our pack.
I have been proved right. The worst thing is we still have a lightweight pack and will have the same problem until next season.
Bear in mind that NB was the FIRST and ONLY giants coach to have a FULL SALARY CAP to work to as well as TRANSFER FEES to buy players when needed.
If you look at the last few years how many teams were up to full salary cap so we would definitely have improved regardless. Brown had his strengths and improved elements of the team in terms of indavidual developments .
He is a NO 2 not a first team coach.
Most of those who are saying on our board he was good for the Giants have been around watching Huddersfield whilst were complete shiite. So for them a few good seasons where we did not lose 50 and 60 nill is a good achievement.
I set my sights higher and have always said Silverware counts the rest is rubbish.
Even Jon sharp got us to a CC final and a fifth place in the table but not many fans are lauding him. '"

| I might disagree with the sentiment of the thread as I dont think its an unmitigated disaster but it has proved a good talking point, and as I said I am sure its been an appalling wasted of opportunity by Brown.
And the comment above re our pack is 100% on the money.
At the start of this season almost unanimously we were all saying we were light in the forwards - and were amazed at the success our light pack had but RL is, always has and always will be a game won and lost in the forwards and if we look at the very best teams they have big, powerful packs.
Moreover once Wigan showed our goal line sliding defence wasnt up to scratch every other team followed suit. It was blindlingly obvious to me that we needed to change, but not to Brown apparently.
Against Wire on Sunday we went to man on man marking in our red zone. And my god did it work - apart from some shocking individual errors they got nothing on our flanks.

Nathan Brown is not the only person who will have a say in the way Saints play. There are players on contracts at Saints that will be as long as Nathan's, there are also coaching staff who will remain long after he has gone.
I find the notion of Nathan Brown being an unmitigated disaster far more silly, than the notion that Nathan Brown will not move into Saints and change the club from top to bottom. Sports clubs are machines, there is a production line of players coming through and Nathan's initial impact will be on the 1st team players.
Granted by his 3rd year he may have made some changes throughout the structure of the club, but that will only have any impact in 4 or 5 years time as the current 14 - 15 year olds come through to play in the first team. The scope for him signing anyone else for next year is limited and given the state of contracts at Saints 2014 is where we will see more moves and more players that are genuine Nathan Brown type players coming in.
There have been many discussions about NB, since it was made know that he was coming to Saints. I don't expect a revolution next year. 2014 will be the time he can really ring the changes he wants.

Either you want Nb as your head coach or you want him as a member of some extended committee. what percentage of say will NB have? 25%?...42%?.....73%? Do tell.
Only one poster has said NB is a disaster. Feel free to reply further to his post. I have given a reasoned 'analysis' why NB has been okay. You have signed a sound assistant coach who as a player and coach has bottled it in far too many big games..
Sadly you are incapable of seeing the difference between a machine and a sports team. But lets run with it. Nathan is a very good formula 1 mechanic (assistant coach) but a 3rd rate driver (head coach).
do you think selecting Wheeler and Roby at prop would be smart? Or dropping shenton in at 13 is a smart move. I hope so because that is what tinkerer brown did at hudds?

You have had your best 4 years since the 50's and that should not be forgotten despite what has happened over the last 10 weeks.'"

He will have the say that a head coach has, but that is not 100% control, it never has been never will be, Huddersfield and Saints have both shown this year that players have elements of control. If you read some of Longy's comments on Saints this year you will see that the more experience Saints players had input with Daniel Anderson with regards to style of play. It would be unrealistic to suggest that a head coach will come in and make changes top to bottom in his first year as players have contracts that they can hold onto. There are players NB may not want, but he will have to work with them until they are out of contract.
ps Shenton?????

| Well over the top to say NB has been an unmitigated disaster imo. Yes, he's done alot of things wrong, but he's also done alot of things right as well, let's not forget that. Those of us who have suffered the years of real pain of following Fartown can see he has taken us from being the whipping boys of SL to being what I would call "the best of the rest" ie better than most teams but still not genuine contenders for silverware.
FWIW though I do think he's stayed too long & the club was going backwards....not just the last few weeks but I have to say I feel he should've gone last season. Also, the fact he hasn't gone back to Oz but has jumped ship to Saints is poor form imo. All the turmoils of previous seasons were due to his "I'm off home....no I'm not" shenanigens & for him to then turn round & go to another SL club after all that is a bit off in my view.
Still he's done alot for Fartown though.

| I think for the saints board their main worry should be the fact that at both clubs he has "lost" the dressing room in a big way. At st George he could perhaps been forgiven for being young and inexperienced and in a position where he was having to manage guys he had once played alongside.
Robbo said in the early years that brown was a breath of fresh air compared to sharp and the best coach he'd worked under- but clearly at the end the players were unhappy and rebelled against him.

| How anyone can claim a coach who took over a mid table team and turned is into a well respected team contesting the top 4 each season and 2 cup semi's a first wembley appearance in 40 years,a team that has beaten leeds at headingley for the first time in 50 years, then to do it in succesive seasons,a coach who has brought through some young quality british and local talent and had us playing some cracking stuff and turned is into sometimes feared opponents for the top clubs, can be considered a disaster is beyond me, were all entitled to our opinions and i respect that, yes he's done some bad things and got things wrong but i prefer to see the bigger picture,it's sad that it ended like this but i certainly appreciate what he's done for us over the last 4 years

| Nathan Brown has been very good for giants even after last seasons will he go or will he stay upset they still finished in good position, ok didn't win anything but still creditable finish. I'll take what he's done for giants and thank him. I've followed Huddersfield since I was old enough to be lifted over turnstile at Fartown. So the last four years for me have been good ones. Also as someone pointed out possibly on another thread about being the first season able to spend up to the salary cap I think that the first time Giants had that ability was the season John Sharp went.

Cant disagree with any of that!
Brown has been good for the club and if we had won on Sun then these type of headlines would not have appeared and we would all be saying that the challenge cup was the one we all really wanted.
Yes he has made mistakes - as we all do - but you can never doubt the fact he did what he felt was the right thing to do. I wish him all the best at the Saints and it will be interesting to see how the Giants react to a NB Saints team.
