If you take my first post on the matter and take out the neutral part of it I would hope that I would say the same. I try to call it as I see it. Back to the spear tackle going back a few years its almost inches away from what people would be calling a textbook tackle, straight on his back and it would have been fine but these days its obviously illegal.

Player reactions are often a good indicator and I think the reactions of most of the players even when the lad is walking off say it all really.

| Yes, Higson patting him on the shoulder is a good indicator as if saying, "Unlucky mate".

| Ball had long since gone in the "spear".
Ridiculous "tackle"
It'll be interesting to hear what Aston senior says.

| On the day I said no but seeing it back he should have gone. The fool stood over Greg and said something and was laughing when he was passing the red. Wasn't interested in the slightest if he'd hurt Greg or not. Stupid idiot and deserves his ban.

Do you think the player knew the ball had gone? I actually think that plays a part in the tackle, the culprit has his head in the guys hip ready to effect the tackle so i doubt he even knows the ball has gone given where he is looking but the Leigh player gives up in the tackle once he has dropped the ball which probably makes the tackle a lot easier for the defender to make and he clearly over does it. You never know with the disciplinary these days though and it could be a 6 game ban.

| In terms of the incidents, if the video shows the first high shot on McNally to be as bad as it looked from the terrace the Sheffield lad will be heading to Red hall
Think the red for the second hit on McNally was correct but would say sending off sufficient, it wasn't a good tackle the player needs chatting to for him to improve his technique.
The 3rd attack on McNally will be the one that deserves some action, stop the video at 5.15 / 6:19 and it pretty much shows what just about everyone in the LSV saw yesterday.

Exactly.
I wonder if people would have a different opinion if [ithey[/i, themselves, had been on the receiving end of a "tackle" like that...

| It wasn't a spear tackle, he was lifted and rolled over onto his back it didn't look great but a spear tackle involves lifting the player vertically and his head being the first contact with the floor, neither happened.

| Spear tackle or not ,it's still an offence to lift a player whereby his legs go higher than his waist ,which in this case happened , making the Refs decision of a Red card the correct one.

Ian, I agree with you on this one. Also did you see stringer patting his players after that incident?
That was close to being very very serious, and the red card was the right decision. I hope the disciplinary sends out a strong message that these kind of tackles are dangerous and will not be tolerated.

| The whistle had gone for a Sheffield penalty about 2/3 seconds before and Aston continued after the whistle with a deliberate tip tackle. Because the whistle had gone the original penalty stood. IMO Aston was attempting to cause injury and deserves his red.

Agreed.
Tom Armstrong did something similar against Salford and got a ban. Although that yesterday was way worse than Tom's, IMO.

He wasn't rolled over onto his back. First contact with the floor was back of the head/neck. Aston tipped him upside down and drove him to the ground without making enough attempt to correct the position.
Definite red, fact that people think otherwise is astonishing

Haha!
Get used to that kind of thought patten on here. Although I am sure some do it just to be awkward.

Think you will find they were given a scrum for a knock on, remember thinking at the time I couldn't understand why it hadn't been overturned for a penalty to us

| First offence always stands IIRC.
Definitely a text book sending off, but I'm not convinced there was intent. The rule book says that it's a sending off, so it's a sending off. My first reaction to the Sheffield players backslapping was that they were reacting like any players do to a big hit. Nothing I've seen changes that view.
The stiff arm though? That was a definite straight red too. He can consider himself lucky on that one.

| Doesn't look like his back to me.
Would agree the red would have been a bit harsh just for the tackle, it was the fact the ball had long since come loose, the tackle was complete and the ref had stopped the game before the spear tackle was put in. Deserves the red.
The high shot that got Gregg stretchered off he holds his hands up straight away but he definitely went for Gregg after the ball had gone. Think he intended to take him out but not high, ended up getting him right across the neck which is why it was so bad. Deserved a red.
