I used to love nookies pie shop years ago me dad used to always take us there, its changed hands so many times in recent years though.

An enduring childhood memory for me is me owd mon bringing home meyt n' tater pies from Plonk Lone Pit canteen. They used to be brilliant, don't know whose pies they were though

Howy, at last someone who remembers them - they were awesome. If i remember correctly they were about as round as a Dawsons but about half as deep. They had a special taste (tangy onion?). About once a fortnight we would use our spending money to go for one instead of buying a Mars or a Bounty lol.

That's right L247, We used to go swimming at Leigh baths on a Saturday morning then have a debate after.
Either chips & gravy at the UCP on Bradshawgate or the Plonk Lone bus to the pit canteen Ah! memories

Dawsons clod on a barm

The shop on Manchester Road opposite the cemetary gates used to sell huge pasties. When I was at Bedford High we always used to go at lunchtime for a pastie on a .

They were Dawson's ones - I used to get the very same when I was at Bedford

Don't remember Dawson's pasties being that big whenever I went in their shop. The ones I'm on about were that big you almost needed 2 barms for the 1 pastie.

Positive that they're Dawson's ones as they are the ones they sell at Heaton's shop on Kirkhall Lane.

Does anyone remember 'Slappy's' in Railway Road. When I was at Leigh College in Railway Road many years ago, I used to cross the road and go into a shop which we all called Slappy's. A guy in the shop used to wear a blood marked apron and his wife would make you a slappy. A slappy is a pie on a barm. It was cheap and kept you going and with the money saved you could go to the Miners and have a game of snooker and 1/2 pint.
I dont think they were the best quality in Leigh, Taylors farther down Railway Road had nicer pies at that time.
I always thought the name slappy was a Leigh thing but it was well kown in the north.

How can anyone like Dawsons pies. You can only eat um cold int thand. Too bloody runny and too much pepper. You need bloody lumps of prator and meight not mush.

You've just given yourself away as an 'interloper'.......anyone from t'Green knows it as t'top shop!!


They do do very passable 'savoury pastry products', but they lose points as their 'Lobby' has got fekkin' carrots in it!!

Well my memory is going now but I think that was Cleminsons at the side of the Journal office and same block as the Post Office on Railway Rd. One of the owners sons beat me up about 50 years ago. I'll get him back one of these days.
