Coach 67 from Monks travel, they ran out of places to park them all, we ended up in a cul de sac 20 mins late.

The problem for Leigh that day was our master tactician (Murph) was in the coaches dugout and, Cas's tactician loose forward (Reilly) was on the pitch!
Reilly knew John Woods was the big danger so he put GB centre John Joyner to stand off to mark woody. It poured down all the match and the Ref, our old friend Billy Thompson, was soaked through. At every scrum Joyner had encroached(behind soaked Billy's back) offside until he was almost level with woody which meant Woody had no room to move as soon he got the ball! Reilly's up and unders and general field kicking were masterful, considering he was in the veteran stage of his career and, virtually playing on one leg! he delivered an abject lesson in leadership,
unfortunately!

agree with kirkhall, reilly was at his brilliant best.

the weather certainly played into cas hands but they were worthy winners on the day.

we actually scored first i think it was steve donlon.

cas were massive underdogs that day. i would say they would have had 12 start on the handicap

Joyner was also an excellent stand off in his own right (capped there as well I think)

There was an old saying; it took a pack to get you to Wembley and a backline to win at Wembley.

would the beardmore twins have been in that cas side as well?

.......What I did n`t remember from those glory days was after being tackled on the 6th tackle, the team in possession had the feed at the scrum.... no wonder we didn`t have a kicking game....

Bob and Kevin Beardmore were certainly playing for Cas in 1981/82 though:

Kevin made 10 apps (6 tries, 18 points)
Bob made 37 apps (13 tries, 11 goals, 1 DG, 62 pts)

In that cup game Bob Beardmore scored one of the Cas tries with the other coming from Gary Hyde who also booted a goal.

The reason I said Gary Hughes is that he came through at the same as Johnny Westhead and Darren Beazant.........Although it could ve been Gary Ainsworth.

Mick Hogan left almost immediately after, when Bishop signed John Butler from saints. Until Danny Campbell and David Stephenson, I thought Butler was our worst ever signing.

Something else I forgot to add about the Leeds game......when Jeff Clarke went over for his try in the first half (he romped in from a short pass from Adrian Earner from at least 85 yards with 9 defenders hanging off his back, maybe more), a lone pitch invaded ran on to congratulate him.

Wearing a bright red jumper and hooped scarf, it was none other than the infamous Dogger Walls!!
