Tesco, I think. They were going on the LSV but wanted land that would have taken up half the stadium, I heard!

Yeah Tesco it is, I drove past on Sunday and they have a board saying, store opening soon, restaurants and a cinema also, theres an artists impression of what it will look like, doesnt look too bad at all, I'm the first to criticise Leigh, but the future isnt looking too bad at all.

| Not surely it's really necessary to have what will then be seven supermarkets (Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrison's, Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Netto) for a place the size of Leigh, but I'm sure they wouldn't be building them if they couldn't make any money. We'll be needing a bypass for the bypass though!

I`d much prefer the option of having all the major supermarket chains in Leyth, than what we had years ago .....Leo`s and 4ck all else and Leo`s usually charged what they wanted with no competition.

I wasn't much of a shopper at the time so I'll take your word for it
No doubt at all that all these supermarkets aren't exactly helping the cause of our town centre, though at least Tesco and the development around there will direct traffic and shoppers further towards town.

The Barlo site with all its amenities will bring lots of folk from the likes of culcheth, glazebury, croft etc into town, rather than having to travel to the Wire dome for a Tescos or the Westbrook for the cinema........ Working in that part of Warrington that`s what a lot of folk have said to me.

The Tesco development can only be a good thing - I'm a little less optimistic about the Morrison's, particularly as it will completely block the view of the stadium from the bypass!

Believe Asda are looking to start opening their own versions of Tesco Express/Sainsbury's Local etc so that might be a (large) option for Netto? Would be daft to knock down summat that must only be about 15 years old.

| but as its virtually in sight of the main ASDA store it must be in peril whereas Athertons Netto should be OK, as for knocking it down that would depend on whether they own or lease the building.

Well that `ll encourage the students to pay entry into the ground, rather than watching the Leythers from the lofty view from the bypass......

IMO the current Netto site is a prime location if ASDA want to do their version of the EXTRA.

| I personally think Sainsbury's will bite the dust once Morrisons and Tesco open. They were struggling early last year and had people on short time as I know people who work there. I understood the new Morrisons will follow the plan of the original Tesco development on LSV whereby it will be on stilts allowing the car park to also go underneath the store.
My other half works at the Ince store so if I get any more info I'll post it on here.

As Bart has said, I think it could work as an 'Extra' type store, effectively an enlarged corner shop so that you don't have to run the gauntlet of the main Asda for a loaf of bread.

Scurilous rumours!!! I know many people who work there, including family, and believe me, none of the permanent staff were on short time. Sainsbury's Leigh is one of the more profitable ones in the area and will be fine

| Makes you wonder doesn't it - how much food can people eat. I guess there are a lot more people living in the Leigh area now than in the early 80's though. All those houses and flats that have been built. With all the takewaways in Leigh as well though, maybe people just eat more.

| And here is an astonishing fact which will come as perhaps little surprise to regular readers of this board but Leigh stores sell more peanut butter and celery than any comparative size town in the UK and even Western Europe.

As you say, it would be a large express and if I remember right ASDA said they would only open them below a certain size, they have also agreed to sell off a number of the Netto stores so watch this space.

I work for sainsburys head office, but I keep a close eye on the store as it's where I started off.
Leigh as a 'site' including the petrol station does very well indeed.
Personally I think that the tesco and morrisons will have a greater negative effect on Asda.
It's incredibly rare for sainsburys to shut supermarkets, even the ones that don't trade that well, its all about market share...
On a separate note I don't think the OFT will allow asda to take all of the Netto stores and launch them as food shops. So the netto in Leigh could go to either another retailer/developer or could be converted into an Asda home store. Possibly.
