| Quote ="Rumpole"We or I didnt make the rules up regarding overseas players that was done long before I came to Gateshead. We are only playing to the rules set out
The EC/UK passport rules then they are the same for you and in essence you could play the same players at your club without breaking the rules however, I do believe in creating our own grown talent and that is what we are trying to achieve in Gateshead and that does take time. Till then it is only right that we do the best for the club within the rules even if those rules have been set by others I believe to balance the lack of home grown talent in the respective expansion area's.
Mr. Findlay came to the club as CEO because I could not run a full time Rugby Club in the North East while operating a business in Yorkshire and the Uk. I doubt that he has any influence within his old firm as now he has turned to the "Dark Side"!!!
Hearland v expansion will always be an emotive issue however both have their place in this game so long as we all can debate in a healthy manner then that has to be good for all of us.
The very best for you all next season and hope to see you at LSV and indeed at the GIS.
Kind Regards
Steven G'"

| Steve, you'll find most will wish you well on here.
What is crippling British RL is a lack of playing pool, yet all we are seeing is more and more 'overseas' players stopping young English/Welsh lads getting a foot on the pro ladder.
We, for whatever reasons, ended up playing a squad of local lads most of whom came through the junior ranks of Leigh MR/Easts/Academy or Amateur Wigan clubs.
Toulouse and Gateshead played mainly overseas players, I cant recall how many Sheffield ended up with, yet we were all in the same comp with relegation at stake or a possible SL visa.
Again good luck with what you are building, all RL fans want expansion - how we achieve causes the division

Sheffield didn't have any overseas players that any other club couldn't have had. They just did the research and recruitment work.

And Steve what are you and your club doing to expand the game ?
You're looking all around the Rl world looking for anyone with a Greek granny et al to fill your squad up .
Is that expansion ? ..... The only expansion I can see is the way you can expand the rules to suit your selves
Now P&R is stopped by Sooper League as there are 2 expansion teams in it that can't go down ( Les Cats & CC ) and 2 teams in chumps League that can't go down ( Well 1 they would have ignored the rules for and Toulouse )
Now the question being asked Steve ....... Is It A Level Playing Feild !!!! ?

First of all Steven, credit to you for coming on here and defending your club with passion. Very few would do that. I am not sure its a wise thing to do all the same but...
Secondly, we recognize that you have only played to the rules that were not set by you. Our problem is the rules themselves - for example, if its hard to attract players from the North East to play for you (as they do not exist in sufficient quantity or quality), why is the next step to go abroad for them - are there not enough decent players nationally for you to go after?

| Quote ="Pepe"I don't think the fans have a problem with Gateshead as such. The problem is with the RFL and the way expansion teams are treated compared to our own. The past failed attempts at expanding the game and the scandalous way Celtic Crusaders were fast tracked, has left a nasty taste in the mouth of heartland supporters and, as a result, expansion clubs are treated with a large degree of suspicion.
If expansion clubs were allowed to play as many quota players as they liked, but could only put licence bids in when they were competing on a level playing field with the rest of us, for the season prior to a bid, there'd be a lot less animosity and distrust of these clubs.
Surely it must be understandable even to you those Leigh fans, who have just lost a relegation battle with you, and have finished above Toulouse, and are still relegated, have every right to question why expansion clubs should be given such protectionist privileges? They had quota players turned down at the start of the season, and here Gateshead are with three!
They’re hurting, and quite understandably too.
I know Gateshead are not at fault, but you simply cannot demand respect from fans of a club which has fallen foul of advantages given to expansion clubs. Leigh are a great old club with a fine history, a decent level of support and a wonderful new ground. They produce an incredible amount of players, considering the size of the town, and would be a massive loss to the game, particularly in the lower leagues, should they now find themselves in trouble in CH1 and go out of business.
Until the RFL can behave in an honest and open manner, and bring through development clubs without it being detrimental to a fair competition and affecting heartland clubs ambitions so badly, it’s not going to be easy for clubs like Gateshead to gain the respect they feel they deserve. Suspicion and mistrust will always remain.
It’s the RFL who are to blame though. Nobody else.'" Well said that man

Scrap the salary cap and base it on what you can afford. Scrap the quota rule, so expansion clubs can bring in players they need and so can the heartland clubs if they want (though they shouldn't need them).
Problem solved.

I'm not too sure that we should scrap the salary cap, but income should certainly play a major part in how much any club can spend.
The quota rule is a good idea. But I think any club wanting to put in a SL bid should have some sort of youth system in place and have a minimum amount of club trained players in the first team squad.
But I don't think the RFL are interested in fairness and want a system in place that they can manipulate to secure the outcome that they want.

Thats one of the reasons the Celts were ahead of us, their youth setup was better than ours - Richard (Head) Lewis said so
