Just been announced on Twitter that ex Leigh & St Helens forward Dave Chisnall has passed away aged 64. Condolences to all the Chisnall family.

RIP Dave, a very speedy prop who never took a backward step.

This is really sad news, Dave has been ill for some time. He was a genuine lad and a good prop forward. He missed Wembley 71 through suspension (he was sent off at Wigan by Billy Thompson for felling Colin Tyrer) The highlight whilst he was at Leigh was his selection for the 1970 Tour (the last touring side to win the Ashes) Leigh Chairman Jack Harding was the tour manager, Johnny Whiteley was the coach and Frank Myler the captain. Chissy had a blinder in the first Test, probably his best game ever. RIP Dave, thanks for the fabulous memories both for our Club and at International level also

Sad to hear this news. I loved him at Saints in the mid late 70's when my dad used to take me to Knowsley road to watch Saints before I discovered Leigh. As has been said he had a phenomenal side step for such a heavy guy, he also had great turn of pace over a short distance. I recall a cover tackle on the touich line on a breakaway he made at Knowsley road and couldn't quite figure who it was, only to discover it was him. I still don't know how he got there. For me he was on old style prop of the type we no longer see...short, very squat with large gut but bags of skill.

Great player of the sort no longer seen in the modern game, had great acceleration over a short distance for a big lad, great ball skills, I witnessed a try for Warrington at Central Park in the 1975 Challenge Cup quarter final against the pies

Chissie collected the ball 15 yards out from the line , chipped over the defence and caught the rebound off the crossbar to score

Fantastic player and a good laugh. Went to Saints tonight and was mentioned but not much response from the crowd. The bloke said they would be having some sort of tribute to Dave in the coming weeks. Sad loss, RIP Dave.

He should never have been banned from Wembley game. Used to get the ball out for Ashcroft every scrum.
I used to go watching them train in them days and the only player faster than Chissy was Rodney Tickle.

I did as well, and can remember in one training session Dave catching Stuart Ferguson after giving him a good 15 yards start!!

Sad news about 'Chissy' he was the fastest Prop Forward I've ever seen and, like many other props his discipline cost him game time.
In the 1970 Lancashire Cup Final Leigh v St.Helens at Station Road Swinton, bets were being taken how long it would be before 'Chissy' and his brother Eric (Saints player) would be sent off! well I can't remember how long it was however, they were duly dispatched from the field of play!!
Leigh won the game 7-4 after Ecky caught a rebounding up and under off the shoulder of the Saints fullback to score under the posts, the only try of the game!

Last time I saw Dave Chisnall was at a LISA meeting in the Micky Martyn bar which was also attended by Kevin Ashscroft'Roy Lester and Billy Thompson.

Billy Thompson? , are you sure frank? , was it not the ' Legends ' night we had, compered by Alan Rowley?

Maybe I am wrong but it was I think the season before we left Hilton Park so 2008.

Correct, it was to be the 1 st of another 3/4 planned from various Era's, we had spoken to Woody who had agreed to attend the next one, the club then stepped in and had their own ' Do ' ,it was originally from an idea myself and Lynda had witnessed at Fax , with Mark Preston,Karl Harrison and John Fieldhouse, which was comered by a ref, organised by Linda ( Johnny Freemans Fan Club )
