Why can't we promote our games like them?

The offer was bring a tramp night. There's alot of homeless in York, they offered soup & a roll for every hobo

winning may help, York have done this before but when the 'good times' dry up so do thier fans they have more fair weather supporters then us

A good crowd, but lots of free tickets given out by all accounts.
Looks good on the telly, but costly and unsustainable.

It's been proven by other clubs (Oldham, Widnes etc), that very few of the 'free' fans return for the next 'all pay' match.

It is never going to be as simple as that though is it

Free tickets are a very good way of getting people to ' taste ' what you have to offer , they are harmless to any club as long as their distribution is policed properly

Long term it is the only way you can increase your fan base without buying a top SL team

But did Widnes and Oldham not think to drip feed people into the game.
With the free ticket is a stub to be ripped off that entitles 2 adults for the price of 1 v AN Other unattractive fixture



Just handing free tickets only achieves small results, the work really starts by having a plan of why you are handing them out and what you really want to achieve, unfortuantly in RL the championship clubs are going for the "I don't want my stadia to look empty" look (which is fair enough if you want too look better than average on a minority TV channel) rather than thinking 'right we've done the hard part we've got potential investors in our club at the ground, what else can we do to get them back until they are hooked'.

For every Sky game in the Championship & Championship 1 there is money from the RFL, which is for the provision of free family tickets, and prematch/halftime entertainment. Presuming that the numbers are the same as for our league, that's 200 family tickets, which equates to 800 people.

Even without those 800, tonight's game would still have been a decent gate, so full credit to York & Oldham fans who turned out, but when sky are in town, RFL pull out all the stops to try and make it seem that the games have better attendances than in fact they would have got, had the game not been televised.

Do they ? , what exactly do they do ?

They throw money at it.

All the clubs play in the Co-oPerative Championships , surely all clubs should benifit [ if of course they do from that sponsorship

Yes you're right, I should've said that the money comes via the RFL. But it's all for the benefit of the TV cameras.

It was a good crowd even with giving away free tickets and it sounded a good atmosphere, well done to both sets of fans.

A stadium at around 80 % full will always sound fairly good

Having said that it is pretty impressive to get any stadium to that level
