On Sunday 31st January, Leigh East U18s travelled across the Pennines in awful weather conditions to face a Hunslet Parkside outfit who had previously remained unbeaten in the last twelve months.
Both teams quickly settled into the arm wrestle in a ferocious opening fifteen minutes. They traded set for set until East hit the front through Liam Berry, who hit a great line from a Danny Melling well timed pass to break the deadlock. This score line remained until the interval however East went down to twelve men following an altercation right on half time.
The second half saw much of the same with East in command and they extended their lead as Ryan Gray broke free in centre field and passed the ball to Jack Kirkpatrick who proceeded to round the Parkside full back and score, extending the Visitors lead to eight points to nil.
Following two failed conversions by Danny Melling he made amends, as he supported a barnstorming Dale Whitworth run going over to score under the posts. A change of goal kicker saw Jordan Hellam convert to give the visitors a fourteen point advantage going into the final quarter. East proceeded to maintain their dominance and put a final nail in the coffin when an offload from Carter Quigley saw Ryan Gray get his name on the score sheet with some outstanding evasive running, sidestepping two before brushing off the fullback and crossing the whitewash to score.
Head Coach Kevin Johnson was a happy man with the performance stating:
"These lads really needed that win today following a tough pre season. To come away from home in testing conditions and dominate a tough Hunslet side is very pleasing. The commitment and team spirit within this group has shown in abundance today"
