| Leigh Miners 28 v 18 Siddal
Summer rugby came to Twist Lane on Saturday afternoon with the fans who turned out not disappointed as Leigh Miners and Siddal produced a cracker of a game in very warm conditions. The contest between two of the big guns of the competition was played at a fast speed throughout, with Siddal controlling the first half to take a 14-4 lead into the break into the sheds and Miners the second as they produced a strong second half performance to win 28-18.
The visitors had most of the ball and field position in the opening forty minutes, with Miners not really helping themselves when they had the ball, coughing the ball up to easily at times by trying to over play and force passes. Nothing can be taken away from Siddal though who were very good in the first half and full value for their half time lead, their only regret being that they hadn't posted more points on the board after keeping the host under the pump for the majority of the half. The opening score of the game came just after the ten minute mark when Fijian winger Taniela Bakoso powered his way over in the corner for the visitors to make it 4-0. Siddal scored their second try on twenty minutes when left winger Gareth Blackburn finished off a break down the left to score, Liam Coe converting to make it 10-0. Miners hit back five minutes later when hooker Danny Jones barrelled his way over to make it 10-4, but that's as good as it got for the home side in the first half as Siddal capitalised on a loose Miners pass just before the break to score their third try of the afternoon, Centre Gavin Stead strolling in to give the Halifax outfit a 14-4 lead going into half time.
Miners knew they had to score first in the second half if they had any chance of winning the game, doing just that by scoring two tries in ten minutes after the restart. The first coming from Shaun Dowie who got on the end of a cross field kick to score and convert his own try and the second coming from Brad Hargreaves who scored in the left corner to tie the game up at 14-14. Siddal edged back in front on fifty five minutes with a try from Billy Hammond to make it 18-14, that lead being short lived as the home side levelled again three minutes later when the outstanding Danny Jackson powered through the Siddal defence to slam the ball down and make it 18-18. Miners took the lead for the first time with five minutes remaining when Hargreaves went over for his second, Dowie converting out wide to give the score 24-18. The two points where secured in the last couple of minutes when Hargreaves completed his hat-trick by again going over in the corner to finish off a great comeback and give the final score 28-18.
Miners have no game next weekend.
