| Leigh Miners 50 v 30 Saddleworth Rangers
Leigh Miners moved up to fifth in the NCL with a scrappy win against relegated Saddleworth Rangers, Miners looked to be on course for a comfortable win at half time when they was leading 26-0 but after a poor second half display the final score ended up at 50-30. The home side couldn’t have much to grumble about in the first half being solid in defence and with ball in hand they was clinical and made Saddleworth pay for their mistakes. Adam Thomason opened the scoring for Miners with a try in the right corner and that was followed by a try under the sticks from hooker Aaron Gorton, Josh Ward converting to give the score 10-0. The next two scores were near length of the field tries, Saddleworth turning the ball over deep inside the Miners half on both occasions and Miners pouncing on the mistake to put more points on the board, the first was scored by Sean Pendlebury who raced away to score in the left corner after some good work from Scott O’Brien and Shaun Marsh, O’Brien was next to score again racing away after Saddleworth coughed up possession, Ward converting to increase the lead to 20-0. Winger Jonny Carroll scored the fifth and final try of the half, Ward adding the extras to send Miners into the half time break 26-0 up.
The start of second half was a completely different story with Miners still being in the sheds for the opening ten to fifteen minutes of the half, Saddleworth running in three converted tries to bring the score to 26-18. Miners put a bit of daylight between the sides with tries from Adam Thomason and Danny Jones to go 36-18 in front but after scoring the second try Miners again switched off and let Saddleworth straight back in the game by conceding a fourth try under the sticks to close the gap to twelve points at 36-24. Lee Gittins scored the home side’s eighth try in the left corner and that was followed by a fifth visiting try to give the score 40-30 with a few minutes remaining. Miners rallied in the closing minutes to finally see of their visitors, Scott O’Brien grabbing his second of the night with an excellent solo effort and he was involved again in setting up the final try, tormenting the Saddleworth defence to send Jonny Carroll in for his double, Josh Ward converting under the sticks to give the final score 50-30 to give Miners two more points but leave the lads knowing that they will have to play much better in their final three league games in they are to make the playoffs.
Miners are away to top of the table Myton Warriors on Saturday.
