| Leigh Miners 32 v 24 Egremont Rangers
Leigh Miners lifted the inaugural Conference Challenge Cup on Sunday beating Egremont Rangers 32-24 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, Miners looked to be cruising to victory after an hour when they were leading 26-0 but they were given an almighty scare in the final quarter by the Cumbrian outfit who scored four tries in a crazy fifteen minute spell to get them within a whisker of completing a sensational comeback, before a late Martin Lewis try sealed the victory for Miners.
Ross Bradley scored Miners opening try after about ten minutes, kicking through the Egremont defence down the left, Scott O’Brien picking up to find Bradley again who dived over at the side of the posts, Jonny Youds converting to give the score 6-0. A few minutes later Youds kicked a penalty goal to move the score to 8-0 in favour of Miners. Egremont replied with a good amount of pressure on the Miners line having plenty of repeat sets and chances to get on the scoreboard but were unable to find a way through a solid Miners defence. With Miners having been under the pump young half back Josh Ward swung the momentum back towards Miners with an excellent 40/20 kick, from that kick the rest of the half belonged to Miners, Martin Lewis scoring on the right from the scrum and he was in for a second just before the break, leaping above the Egremont defenders to collect Scott O’Brien’s cross field kick to score out on the right, Youds converting both tries to send Miners into the half time break 20-0 up after an excellent opening forty minutes in both attack and defence.
The second half was more of the same from Miners with them sniffing out anything Egremont’s attack was throwing at them and when hooker Aaron Gorton went in from thirty yards out to score Miners fourth try under the posts on the hour mark to give the score 26-0 it looked as though Miners were well on their way to record a comfortable victory. Gary Elliott scored what all of the ground would have thought would be mere consolation for Egremont to give the score 26-6, but that was only the start in what was to become a glorious ten to fifteen minute spell for the Rangers scoring again soon after through John Paul Brocklebank and when Jamie McDonald scored a third try to get Egremont within eight points of Miners at 26-18 with ten minutes remaining. The Cumbrian crowd was now right behind their team roaring them on, when ten minutes before it looked like it was going to be nothing more than a comfortable Leigh Miners win. Miners knew they just had to get their hands on the ball to change the momentum and settle themselves down, but that was easier said than done with Egremont in full flow, Richard Farrer scored a fourth try at the side of the posts, Brocklebank landing his fourth successful conversion to give the score 26-24 with less than five minutes remaining to set up a tense end to the game. When Miners finally got hold of the ball in the final few minutes they calmed themselves down and regrouped to see the game out much to the relief of everyone involved with the club after looking as though they were going to throw a healthy twenty six point advantage away after a disastrous fifteen minute period. Martin Lewis claimed his hat-trick when he got on the end of Scott O’Brien’s kick behind the Egremont defence to score in the corner, Jonny Youds made sure there was to be no more Egremont revival kicking his sixth goal off the touchline to open up an eight point gap at 32-24 with less than two minutes on the clock. MOM and club Captain Scott O’Brien had the final say of the game kicking the ball out of play when the siren went to send all the Miners players, coaching staff committee and supporters back to Twist Lane delighted after claiming their first Trophy success in seven years.
