I think I finally cracked it by finding a way to follow the original suggestion.
I reinstalled the FlashPlayer via the desktop using Firefox-I think.
Seems to work ok in IE8 now -thanks for the help

Firefox will import all your favourites, history, cookies etc. Moving over is a doddle. Haven't used IE for ages and never needed to.

I like Opera, with the only exception that Facebook seems to get it to grind to a halt, although that may be at least partially due to a pispoor wireless connection
