| Quote ="The Speculator" On a matter of protocol, it was interesting that when they were looking at the Thewlis one, the video ref checked if Thewlis was onside. Had there been no knees in the tackle, I assume the ref would have simply awarded the try, so was the video ref within his rights to check the onside? Thankfully it didn't matter on this occasion.'"
For anyone actually at the match, was Thewlis onside?
From the limited TV replays, it was very unclear and, from where he collected the ball, he must have shifted at a fair rate to have been onside?

It’s the name as we know it, because it’s the only time the penalty is a straight kick, like a conversion, the option to run the play isn’t there, but the reality is, it’s only a 2 point penalty.

So can we have the extra 2 points then for the purposes of points difference?
I think it is short hand for “can i award a penalty on top of the try and conversion for an offence committed in the act of scoring”

It was more or less level with me, and yes I thought he was on side. He did shift to collect the kick, but the ball did, also, seem to hang in the air for a while as well.

I agree that Bullock was very very good again. I thought he was good last season but he’s getting better and cutting out the little errors that had let him down. I’m yet to see Dudson in a Wire shirt but I’d be very surprised if he’s got the game to take Bullocks place if all are fit.

| I think it's referred to as an 8 point try, to differentiate it from a penalty try.

Presumably though, he'd have brought along his D:Ream bandmates from the 90s and belted out 'Things can only get better' whilst the team huddled behind the sticks.

Dudson has a real job getting anyone's place, which is a lovely problem to have.

| having watched the game back, i can absolutely see the reason for the sin bin.... Salford were spoiling as much as they could.... there was a constant stream of penalties, all of which seemed warranted. having said that, the holding of the hands up by Harrison (i think), was pretty poor. We dont want to be seeing that.
both 8 point try's, by the letter of the law were correct.... first one deffo... no need for the knees... second one was a bit iffy, but he made contact with the head.. so he cant really have any complaints.. game was won by that point anyway.
it was really good to see that this team has some fight in it as well.... first time they have faced adversity and they all stood up to be counted.
We will be up challenging for the top 4 with this side imo.

| Not a great win or display to be honest. 1st half our defense was as hard as hot butter, it was shocking. 2nd half we came out like we should have the 1st and i think we may have been able to grind out a win. But Brierly being sent off was a major fact of us winning the game, as them imploded from that point.
But the display from us before Brierly was sent off was amazing to see and 100% turn around from last season.
And we did it without James Harrison and i think Kasiano as well in the 2nd half. So as long as we learn from it and turn up from the start we'll be good

| Showed good resilience to come back. The edges looked fragile early on, but fixed it on the field, which is good.
Our second half was helped by the notorious Rowley ill discipline. In the first half there was none of it, but watching the game back he is crowing about not getting any set restarts, and in the post match it’s the same story. I’d wager that he has gone off on a rampage at half time and got in the heads of his players.
They didn’t really need it, they moved our big pack around and almost ran away from our strengths and attacked Minikin and Matautia, in particular, well.
That said, the play from Thewlis to get the ball out of our in goal changed the game. Superb talent.

I wonder if Dudson will get Harrison’s place purely to allow Harrison to get his knee right. Probably back around the same time as Philbin so that will be an interesting selection dilemma. Agree with others though that Bullock is up there this season.

Surprised it wasn’t Watkins going in the bin. Constant lying on in the tackle

| Regarding the props I think when have them all back it would be wise to rotate them given what they put their bodies through. It’s a long season and keeping them fresh and fit for the back end of the season is important. So long as none get injured ofc.

I disagree about Brierley sinbin being a major swing..
We were already in ascendancy, dominant attack and Salford were desperate and on the cliff of free fall. The sinbinning was nearer coincidental than a factor. If he’d have not been given the 10, he may have had enough affect to have kept us one score lower. Imo

Yes, but 1) We also have Wrench and Peter M. (not saying they are his standard but in the interests of balance

What an amazing signing that is, I think he had a year without a club before Salford, great find. And Dupree looks like a good player too.

| The more I see of Thewlis I can't help thinking that he should have spent time as a youngster at half-back or centre ... I suppose he had more space and preferred FB. He looks a lovely passer of a ball.
Whilst we are handing out awards for great skill what about Mata'uta's offload for Dufty's try.

He's been fantastic. A talented, brave and clever player. I'm a bit worried how many knocks to the head he's getting at the moment - 3 on Thursday. I know he's streets ahead of Russell but I wouldn't mind him having a breather one week if he gets many more.

Peanut isn’t very good. I’d rather Watkins and Lafai over Ma’tautia and Stef.
Whilst we have a good pack and two very good halfbacks, we have the worst centres in the league IMO.
